INFOhio, Ohio’s K-12 digital library is very proud to have worked with the MCOECN for the past 21 years and to be prominently featured on their website. As Sarah explained, the movement to blended and digital education is moving at the speed of light. Everyone in this room can place their school district somewhere on the digital learning continuum. INFOhio is no different. We have moved from just being a library catalog or just being databases to developing strong tools and amazing resources to support school’s critical needs.

In the next few minutes, please join me on a resource walk as we look at how INFOhio the digital K-12 library for Ohio supports the state of Ohio’s push to an innovation economy through blended and digital learning, college and career readiness, Ohio’s new learning standards including the Common Core and professional development needs. .
This graphical depiction of College and Career Readiness says it all. From preparing our earliest learners to meet the challenges of strong reading, writing and math curriculum to challenging our 4-12 th grade students to prepare for whatever post secondary options they choose, Ohio’s education community is finding ourselves in the middle of a whirlwind of change. With the shifts to Common Core standards that have College and Career Readiness anchor standards, all educators are talking and learning about the new instructional shifts. These shifts in understanding, integrating and aligning your curriculum to the Common Core Standards have probably made you feel like you are lifting 300 lb iron weight. [email_address]
For those of you wondering where to find the resources to accommodate these major educational shifts. INFOhio has an answer. INFOhio provides you with a “virtual door” to no cost, high quality, teacher selected, and curriculum-related databases for your instructional program. Many of you have probably used Google or Wikipedia at one time or another. These are good resources, but to raise the bar and reach for the rigor required in the Common Core you need access to multiple digital and print databases that provide reliable and authoritative evidence. These electronic resources – provided at no charge -- are funded by Libraries Connect Ohio (LCO) using a combination of federal funds through the State Library of Ohio, in addition to state appropriations from OhioLINK, OPLIN, and INFOhio.
This core collection of 16 high quality resources is available to you and your students 24x7. If you are at home, you will need the user name and password you see on your handout. But the question remains, how do these resources connect to the Common Core. How can your teachers and students use these effectively to raise the rigor and critical thinking skills necessary for the Common Core?
Let’s look at how INFOhio supports the Common Core. On this slide are some of the key concepts that are found in the Common Core. These are all connected to Inquiry and improving student’s critical thinking skills. key concepts. Literacy Across the Curriculum / Research / Text Complexity and Informational Text / College & Career Readiness / Mathematical Principals. Not only does INFOhio provide the tools, but we are creating connections from five key Common Core concepts to those tools.
Keeping up with the changing standards? Are you confident about teaching your students the inquiry process? Wish you knew how to get started? Don't worry, you're not alone. Many educators are in your position and are looking for a quality solution. INFOhio's IMatrix system will help you understand inquiry and offer you a variety of materials for classroom instruction... and everything is directly tied to your standards. The IMatrix cube represents how the system works. The layers are the grade levels—Pre-K through 12 (green). The cube is four rows deep with each row representing a major content area (yellow). If you slice the cube from left to right you will see the six Dimensions of Inquiry—each representing a group of skills and steps in the inquiry process (blue). 10/04/12
GO INFOhio breaks the research process down into three major steps: Ask—ACT—Achieve. Each phase asks key questions that link students to INFOhio resources, forms, and reliable websites.
Federal grant from State Library of Ohio to create Information Literacy Course: Blended Learning in Action Aimed at Juniors and Seniors. Getting students ready for college and careers and getting teachers ready for blended learning. Increase rigor in research. We’re on schedule to have it ready in the fall, we’re hoping by the end of October. The idea is that students can work on a module at home and then teachers can review the results and address misconceptions and weak points one-on-one or in small groups. And it’s sensitive to the fact that not everyone has great Internet access. Designed it so that a teacher can download materials to use with class.
The Online Library Catalog that your district supports offers the first front to finding lexiles for text complexity. Most students know what lexile they are reading at, so having resources that allow them to select a reading at their lexile level allows teachers to differentiate without singling out any student.
Both EBSCOhost and World Book allow for lexile searching also. Ebsco actually promotes differentiation by allowing the student or teacher to select a lexile range for the topic they are researching. This can help all students find the information they need at their reading level. World Book does lexile their articles which helps everyone to know the rigor of the article.
