Elephants in Circuses
1.
2. The Jewish Principle Tzar Ba’aley Chaim states, “Does the
Benefit of humankind out weigh the potential pain and suffering
of an animal.”
“In Sifrei Devarim 96 it says, “God has compassion on all who have
compassion on their fellow creatures”.
Tzar Ba’aley Chaim literally means, “Compassion for the pain of
living creatures.”
One of the most interesting quotes in the Talmud that concerns
Tzar Ba’aley Chaim is in Berachot 40a, it states, “You must not eat
your own meal until you have seen to it that all of your animals are
properly fed.”
3. ELEPHANTS IN CIRCUSES
Elephants in circuses have been a big problem in our world.
Elephants have been not treated well, humiliated, and abused
in circuses. The website PETA (People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals) talks about how cruel the trainers are
to elephants in circuses and when elephants travel. Ringling
Bros. and Barnum and Bailey are two famous circuses where
elephants are treated with disrespect.
4. RINGLING BROS. AND BARNUM AND
BAILEY
Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey is an American circus
company. The company was started by James Anthony Bailey
and P.T Barnum in 1907. This circus uses all kinds of animals
including goats, zebras, horses, elephants, tigers, and lamas.
5. Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey use Asian elephants.
The Asian elephant is the second largest land mammal in the
world and one of the most intelligent animals on the planet.
There are only 35,000 Asian elephants left on the planet. This
kind of elephant is one of the world most endangered species.
6. SIGNS ELEPHANTS USE
Elephants often show many signs of being stressed out or
bored, like engaging in repetitive movements . If elephants
sway there trunks back and forth it is a clear sign of stress.
Also if there ears are pointed out and there head is pointing
down they are also showing stress or boredom.
7. FACTS ABOUT ELEPHANT CRUELT Y
• Elephants are beaten with bull hooks and shocked with
electric prods during training time.
•Elephants are confined in filthy cages, which they
eat, sleep, and urinate in all the same place.
Elephants who perform in circuses are often kept in chains for
as long as 23 hours a day from the time they are babies .
Baby elephants are removed from their mothers to train for
circuses. They are tied with ropes, which leads to rope burn.

9. MAKE A DIFFERENCE
If you want to make a dif ference I suggest who do the
following:
• Never go to a Ringling Bros. or Barnum and Bailey Circus!
• Go to a circus without animal performances. For
instance, go to the acrobat circus, Cirque du Soleil.
• Donate to the Humane Society so animal cruelty will stop.
• Learn more about elephants in circuses so you can start
your own organization.
•Educate everyone you know who can make a dif ference.
• Alert the media and tell them the abuse of elephants.
10. THANK YOU
I hope you enjoyed this PowerPoint and
learned about how elephants are abused in
circuses. I think everyone should step up and
make a difference.
