1. Identify the auxiliary of the sentence
He bought a present for me. (as the verb is in past,
the auxiliary is ‘did’).
2. Identify the subject of the sentence
He bought a present for me.
3. Identify if the sentence is positive or negative
He bought a present for me. (It’s positive)
4. If it’s positive the auxiliary of the question tag
goes in negative
He bought a present for me, didn’t he?
5. If it’s negative the auxiliary of the question tag
goes in positive
