A priest, banished for doctrinal heresy to an isolated, backward
mountain parish, strives to achieve personal redemption by bringing
salvation to his virtually sub-human flock. The local whore stirs up their
passions, embodying all the forces against which the priest’s reforming

of that conflict. The novelist’s suicide in 1910 was probably related to
tensions and anxieties communicated in this text.
