2. PLAGIARISM
is defined as the
Plagiarism
use or close imitation of the
language and thoughts of
another author and passing
the work off as one’s own
(Wikipedia).
3. YOU DECIDE…..
will be giving you some examples
We
of cases in which a student may have
or may not have plagiarized their work.
It is up to you to decide whether or not
they did.
4. EXAMPLE #1
teacher assigned an essay on
Becky’s
the Civil War for homework. Becky
went home and searched the Internet
for information about the war. She
found numerous facts online, that she
decided to use in her paper. She did
not cite any quotes or other authors’
words within the paper but cited her
sources at the end. Did Becky
plagiarize?
5. ANSWER
technically Becky did
Yes,
plagiarize, because while she showed
her sources at the end of her paper in
a bibliography, she did not cite the
sources within the paper when she
used them.
6. EXAMPLE #2
Brandon is a college student at Michigan State
University. He has exams this week along with 2
term papers to write. One of his term papers is for
his Spanish class. While he was in the library the
other day, Brandon found a book that was written in
Spanish and that he could use to help him write his
term paper. Well, Brandon ended up procrastinating
and waited until the night before to type his paper.
Three out of the five pages that he wrote were
taken directly from the book. No where in his paper
did he state that he was using information from the
book he found at the library. Did Brandon
plagiarize?
7. ANSWER
answer is yes. Brandon definitely
The
plagiarized. A majority of his paper
was taken word for word from the
book, and he didn’t cite his resources.
In this case, however, even if he had
cited that he used the book to help
him, he still would have been
convicted of plagiarism because only a
certain amount of work can be taken
from another author or person.
8. EXAMPLE #3
Lucy is writing a speech about how beauty
pageants are harmful to little girls. She
uses a variety of sources including:
books, Internet, T.V., magazines and radio.
When writing her speech Lucy cites and
gives credit when she uses information that
she found in books and on the Internet.
However, she does not cite the information
that she got from T.V. or radio. Did Lucy
plagiarize?
9. ANSWER
Yes,in fact Lucy did plagiarize. All
information needs to be cited no matter
what the source of it is. This is why there
are so many problems with plagiarizing in
schools. All of the new forms of technology
present new ways to obtain information.
While it may not seem necessary to cite the
source, one must because the information is
not their own.
10. TO SUM IT ALL UP
those few examples helped
Hopefully
you grasp a better understanding of
the different ways that students
plagiarize and some of the things to
look out for when you are an educator
yourself. Plagiarism is a serious issue
and it needs to be treated as one.
Students and teachers both need to be
aware of the ways that one can avoid
plagiairsm.
