1. Name: Walid Hashisho Class: Humanities Grade: 9 B Haiti: The Impacts Of Earthquakes
2. How are earthquakes caused? Earthquakes are caused by tectonic plates shifting and causing friction when bumping into each other. Tectonic plates are plates that create the first layer of the earth; the crust. When a plate rubs onto another it creates an energy that is then released as an earthquake.
3. Haiti and its earthquake The reason that Haiti was struck with such a large scale earthquake is because Haiti is close to the border line between the Caribbean plate and the North American plate.
4. Size difference The Caribbean plate is small compared to the North American plate which is why the energy was released on the Caribbean plate in such a big burst of energy.
5. How much damage has the Earthquake caused Haiti? Haiti has been damaged in many ways. Environmentally the damage that has been caused has left it impossible to be fixed. There are many buildings that have been destroyed and most streets are filled with debris. With Haiti already being a poor country it will be hard to recover but with the help of countries such as the :
7. UK 30,000,000 (thirty million dollars) they may be able to fix the wreckage problems.
8. Another problem that presents its self to the economics of the country is the fact that they may not be able to salvage their main source of income which is agriculture. The problem that the earth quake caused for the agriculture of Haiti is that the soil that they are familiar with has moved. This is a problem because they don’t know where the soil is rich or if there even is any rich soil on the island. This is a very large problem for Haiti because it was an island that relied on agriculture but was still poor and now that the soil has been displaced it will be even harder for them to survive economically.
9. Why wasn’t the country prepared for the earthquake? The reason the country wasn’t prepared for this epidemic is because they didn’t have a strong government.
10. . If they did have a strong government then they would have been prepared for the earth quake
12. Another problem with Haiti having a week government is that there is no one to guide them or help them with tasks such as connecting with family members.
13. Will Haiti be able to get back on its feet? It may be impossible for Haiti to become as it was. Economically it will never be able to recover because of the fact that their biggest source of income which is agriculture has been destroyed by the earth quake. Another problem that they will experience is the fact that they will owe debt to some of the places that have contributed to their aid such as the World Bank in which they had to take a loan
14. . The only thing they can do now socially is make sure that most people are fine but recovering their homes may not be possible. The crisis that has happened in Haiti maybe just the beginning of their problems that have yet to have presented themselves.
