The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake caused a massive tsunami that devastated coastlines in Indonesia and 11 other countries. A 9.0 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra on December 26, 2004, generating giant tsunami waves up to 124 feet high. Over 150,000 people were killed or reported missing as the tsunami destroyed coastal communities with waves reaching as far as the coasts of Africa. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.
