SWDC 2011: Mobile UI Design - Web or Native?

In the last couple of years we have seen an explosion of single-page applications beyond the traditional complex applications, making its way into the mainstream and the consequent appearance of frameworks to facilitate the creation of these applications for desktop and mobile devices. In this session we will cover the motivations and implications of creating single-page apps, as well as the current state of the industry, the trends that are starting to arise in the field and the role of nodejs to facilitate the initial render process on the server side before handing over the control to the browser, as a way to speed up the initial rendering as the new bread of what we call isomorphic javascript applications.

Building solutions in SharePoint isn’t simply about getting the functionality right based on the business requirements. Developers must think about the entire user experience. In this interactive class, we’ll discuss questions like: How should the user feel when they use this piece of functionality? Will they see it as saving them work or creating new work? How will it compare to what they see on the consumer Web? We’ll look at good and bad examples from SharePoint itself, as well as specific customizations.

uilding solutions in SharePoint isn’t simply about getting the functionality right based on the business requirements. Developers must think about the entire user experience (UX), which goes far beyond the technical aspects of the solution. It’s no longer good enough to meet the specifications. We must exceed them in terms of usability. This takes many developers out of their comfort zones and into the messy world of end users. In this interactive session, we’ll discuss questions like: * How should the user feel when they use this piece of functionality? * Will they perceive that this functionality saves them work or creates new work? * How will the functionality compare to what they see on the consumer Web? * How can we use technologies which haven’t historically been considered mainstream SharePoint developer tools (like jQuery and CSS) to make SharePoint feel more like the sites people love? We’ll look at good and bad examples from SharePoint itself as well as specific customizations.

As developers, one of the largest challenges is deciding what kind of mobile application to build: mobile web, hybrid, or native mobile. This is a thorny question because there isn’t a black-and-white answer. The solution can sit anywhere from pure mobile web to pure native mobile, or somewhere in between. In this session, Shane Church, Technical Lead at EffectiveUI, will uncover how the answer is tied to deep consideration of architecture decisions, the needs of the user, and the business goals for both the short and long term. He’ll take attendees step-by-step through the questions and project considerations they should address when preparing to embark on a mobile development project. Attendees will also learn that their responses to these questions will drive a clear path to the right decision that keeps end-users and organizational goals in line.

To create the best mobile applications possible we have to look at the design from a user perspective before we start programming a single line of code. And the design process doesn’t stop after the first deployment. When an application has been submitted to a marketplace or appstore we can start monitoring the usage and study the end-user reviews. The following topics are covered in this slidedeck: 1. Creating awareness on the importance of app strategy and design. 2. What should be happening before we start developing mobile apps? 3. What should be done once the mobile app has been deployed? 4. Wrap up and next steps.
