Sustainable Transition to Green Economy

Green economy is one that results in improved human well-being
and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and
ecological scarcities - United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) (2010)

Green economy is a economy or economic development model based
on sustainable development and a knowledge of ecological economics

In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which
is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.

Greenhouse gas (sometimes abbreviated GHG) is a gas in an
atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal
             infrared range.
This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect
The primary greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere are water
vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone.
In the Solar System, the atmospheres of Venus, Mars, and Titan also
contain gases that cause greenhouse effects.
             Greenhouse gases greatly affect the temperature of the Earth;
without them, Earth's surface would be on average about 33 °C
             (59 °F)[

Atmospheric absorption and scattering at different electromagnetic
wavelengths. The largest absorption band of carbon dioxide is in
             the infrared.
Greenhouse gases are those that can absorb and emit infrared radiation.
In order, the most abundant greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are:
                   water vapor
                   carbon dioxide
                   methane
                   nitrous oxide
                   ozone
Atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, and their increase or loss,
are determined by the balance between sources (emissions of the gas from
human activities and natural systems) and sinks (the removal of the gas
from the atmosphere by conversion to a different chemical compound

The proportion of an emission (e.g. CO2) remaining in the
atmosphere after a specified time is the "Airborne fraction".
More precisely, the annual AF is the ratio of the
atmospheric CO2 increase in a given year to that year’s total
emissions, and calculate that of the average 9.1 PgC y−1 of
total anthropogenic emissions from 2000 to 2006, the AF
             was 0.45.
For CO2 the AF over the last 50 years (1956–2006) has
             been increasing at 0.25 ± 0.21%/year.

Aside from purely human-produced synthetic halocarbons, most
greenhouse gases have both natural and human-caused sources.
During the pre-industrial Holocene, concentrations of existing gases were
             roughly constant.
In the industrial era, human activities have added greenhouse gases to the
atmosphere, mainly through the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of
             forests.
The 2007 Fourth Assessment Report compiled by the IPCC (AR4) noted
that "changes in atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases and
aerosols, land cover and solar radiation alter the energy balance of the
climate system", and concluded that "increases in anthropogenic
greenhouse gas concentrations is very likely to have caused most of the
increases in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century".
In AR4, "most of" is defined as more than 50%.

The main sources of greenhouse gases due to human activity are:
Burning of fossil fuels and deforestation leading to higher carbon dioxide
concentrations in the air. Land use change (mainly deforestation in the
tropics) account for up to one third of total anthropogenic CO2 emissions
          Livestock enteric fermentation and manure
management, paddy rice farming, land use and wetland changes, pipeline
losses, and covered vented landfill emissions leading to higher methane
          atmospheric concentrations.
Many of the newer style fully vented septic systems that enhance and target
the fermentation process also are sources ofatmospheric methane.
Use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in refrigeration systems, and use of
CFCs and halons in fire suppression systems and manufacturing processes.
agricultural activities, including the use of fertilizers, that lead to higher
          nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations.

Measurements from Antarctic ice cores show that before industrial
emissions started atmospheric CO2 mole fractions were about 280 parts per
million (ppm), and stayed between 260 and 280 during the preceding ten
             thousand years.
Carbon dioxide mole fractions in the atmosphere have gone up by
approximately 35 percent since the 1900s, rising from 280 parts per million
by volume to 387 parts per million in 2009.
One study using evidence from stomata of fossilized leaves suggests
greater variability, with carbon dioxide mole fractions above 300 ppm
during the period seven to ten thousand years ago,
Though others have argued that these findings more likely reflect
calibration or contamination problems rather than actual CO2 variability.
Because of the way air is trapped in ice (pores in the ice close off slowly to
form bubbles deep within the firn) and the time period represented in each
ice sample analyzed, these figures represent averages of atmospheric
concentrations of up to a few centuries rather than annual or decadal levels.

Sustainable Transition to Green Economy

All living organisms are based on the carbon atom. Unique among the
common elements of the earth's surface, the carbon atom has the ability to
form bonds with as many as four other atoms (including other carbon
atoms) and to form double bonds to itself.
Carbon compounds can be solid, liquid, or gas under conditions commonly
found on the earth's surface. Because of this, carbon can help form solid
minerals (such as limestone), 'squishy' organisms (such as plants and
animals), and can be dissolved in water or carried around the world through
the atmosphere as carbon dioxide gas.
The attributes of the remarkable carbon atom make possible the existence
of all organic compounds essential to life on earth.
Carbon atoms continually move through living organisms, the oceans, the
atmosphere, and the crust of the planet. This movement is known as the
             carbon cycle.
The paths taken by carbon atoms through this cycle are extremely complex,
and may take millions of years to come full circle.

The carbon cycle is the biogeochemical cycle by which carbon is exchanged among
the biosphere, pedosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere of the Earth.
It is one of the most important cycles of the earth and allows for carbon to be
recycled and reused throughout the biosphere and all of its organisms
The carbon cycle was initially discovered by Joseph Priestley and Antoine Lavoisier,
and popularized by Humphry Davy.[1] It is now usually thought of as including the
following major reservoirs of carbon interconnected by pathways of exchange:
The atmosphere, The terrestrial biosphere, which is usually defined to include fresh
water systems and non-living organic material, such as soil carbon.
The oceans, including dissolved inorganic carbon and living and non-living marine
          biota,
          The sediments including fossil fuels.
The Earth's interior, carbon from the Earth's mantle and crust is released to the
atmosphere and hydrosphere by volcanoes and geothermal systems.

  • 5. Sustainable Transition to Green Economy Green economy is one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities - United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) (2010) Green economy is a economy or economic development model based on sustainable development and a knowledge of ecological economics In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive. • 8. Sustainable Transition to Green Economy Greenhouse gas (sometimes abbreviated GHG) is a gas in an atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal infrared range. This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect The primary greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. In the Solar System, the atmospheres of Venus, Mars, and Titan also contain gases that cause greenhouse effects. Greenhouse gases greatly affect the temperature of the Earth; without them, Earth's surface would be on average about 33 °C (59 °F)[ By: Asif Kabani [kabani.asif@gmail.com]

  • 11. Sustainable Transition to Green Economy Atmospheric absorption and scattering at different electromagnetic wavelengths. The largest absorption band of carbon dioxide is in the infrared. Greenhouse gases are those that can absorb and emit infrared radiation. In order, the most abundant greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are: water vapor carbon dioxide methane nitrous oxide ozone Atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, and their increase or loss, are determined by the balance between sources (emissions of the gas from human activities and natural systems) and sinks (the removal of the gas from the atmosphere by conversion to a different chemical compound By: Asif Kabani [kabani.asif@gmail.com]

  • 13. Sustainable Transition to Green Economy The proportion of an emission (e.g. CO2) remaining in the atmosphere after a specified time is the "Airborne fraction". More precisely, the annual AF is the ratio of the atmospheric CO2 increase in a given year to that year’s total emissions, and calculate that of the average 9.1 PgC y−1 of total anthropogenic emissions from 2000 to 2006, the AF was 0.45. For CO2 the AF over the last 50 years (1956–2006) has been increasing at 0.25 ± 0.21%/year. By: Asif Kabani [kabani.asif@gmail.com]

  • 15. Sustainable Transition to Green Economy Aside from purely human-produced synthetic halocarbons, most greenhouse gases have both natural and human-caused sources. During the pre-industrial Holocene, concentrations of existing gases were roughly constant. In the industrial era, human activities have added greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, mainly through the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests. The 2007 Fourth Assessment Report compiled by the IPCC (AR4) noted that "changes in atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases and aerosols, land cover and solar radiation alter the energy balance of the climate system", and concluded that "increases in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations is very likely to have caused most of the increases in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century". In AR4, "most of" is defined as more than 50%. By: Asif Kabani [kabani.asif@gmail.com]

  • 19. Sustainable Transition to Green Economy The main sources of greenhouse gases due to human activity are: Burning of fossil fuels and deforestation leading to higher carbon dioxide concentrations in the air. Land use change (mainly deforestation in the tropics) account for up to one third of total anthropogenic CO2 emissions Livestock enteric fermentation and manure management, paddy rice farming, land use and wetland changes, pipeline losses, and covered vented landfill emissions leading to higher methane atmospheric concentrations. Many of the newer style fully vented septic systems that enhance and target the fermentation process also are sources ofatmospheric methane. Use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in refrigeration systems, and use of CFCs and halons in fire suppression systems and manufacturing processes. agricultural activities, including the use of fertilizers, that lead to higher nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations. • 23. Sustainable Transition to Green Economy Measurements from Antarctic ice cores show that before industrial emissions started atmospheric CO2 mole fractions were about 280 parts per million (ppm), and stayed between 260 and 280 during the preceding ten thousand years. Carbon dioxide mole fractions in the atmosphere have gone up by approximately 35 percent since the 1900s, rising from 280 parts per million by volume to 387 parts per million in 2009. One study using evidence from stomata of fossilized leaves suggests greater variability, with carbon dioxide mole fractions above 300 ppm during the period seven to ten thousand years ago, Though others have argued that these findings more likely reflect calibration or contamination problems rather than actual CO2 variability. Because of the way air is trapped in ice (pores in the ice close off slowly to form bubbles deep within the firn) and the time period represented in each ice sample analyzed, these figures represent averages of atmospheric concentrations of up to a few centuries rather than annual or decadal levels. • 27. Sustainable Transition to Green Economy All living organisms are based on the carbon atom. Unique among the common elements of the earth's surface, the carbon atom has the ability to form bonds with as many as four other atoms (including other carbon atoms) and to form double bonds to itself. Carbon compounds can be solid, liquid, or gas under conditions commonly found on the earth's surface. Because of this, carbon can help form solid minerals (such as limestone), 'squishy' organisms (such as plants and animals), and can be dissolved in water or carried around the world through the atmosphere as carbon dioxide gas. The attributes of the remarkable carbon atom make possible the existence of all organic compounds essential to life on earth. Carbon atoms continually move through living organisms, the oceans, the atmosphere, and the crust of the planet. This movement is known as the carbon cycle. The paths taken by carbon atoms through this cycle are extremely complex, and may take millions of years to come full circle. By: Asif Kabani [kabani.asif@gmail.com]

  • 30. Sustainable Transition to Green Economy The carbon cycle is the biogeochemical cycle by which carbon is exchanged among the biosphere, pedosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere of the Earth. It is one of the most important cycles of the earth and allows for carbon to be recycled and reused throughout the biosphere and all of its organisms The carbon cycle was initially discovered by Joseph Priestley and Antoine Lavoisier, and popularized by Humphry Davy.[1] It is now usually thought of as including the following major reservoirs of carbon interconnected by pathways of exchange: The atmosphere, The terrestrial biosphere, which is usually defined to include fresh water systems and non-living organic material, such as soil carbon. The oceans, including dissolved inorganic carbon and living and non-living marine biota, The sediments including fossil fuels. The Earth's interior, carbon from the Earth's mantle and crust is released to the atmosphere and hydrosphere by volcanoes and geothermal systems. By: Asif Kabani [kabani.asif@gmail.com]
