Querelas do Brasil, written by Maurício Tapajós and Aldir Blanc, refers to the famous song Aquarela do Brasil in its title but has a different message. While Aquarela do Brasil portrayed an idealized, patriotic view of Brazil, Querelas do Brasil draws attention to real political, social, and cultural issues in Brazil represented by indigenous customs, arts, folklore. The Portuguese word "Querela" can be translated to "Complaint" or "Grievance," suggesting this song laments problems in Brazil that differ from the boastful vision of Aquarela do Brasil.

2. ON AQUARELAS & QUERELAS
Querelas do Brasil, written by Maurício Tapajós and Aldir Blanc, was first
recorded by Elis Regina in her 1978 album Transversal do Tempo.
The title clearly refers to Aquarela do Brasil, the famous music composed
by Ary Barroso. However, the similarity between the two songs does not go
further.
Written in 1939 and extolling the qualities and grandiosity of the Country,
Aquarela do Brasil started in music an extremely patriotic movement that
would be known as samba-exaltação [samba-exaltation].

3. Querelas do Brasil displays another reality, quite different from that depicted
by the boastful verses of Aquarela do Brasil.
Tapajós and Blanc draw attention to Brasil’s political, social and cultural
matters, represented by customs, arts, folklore and indigenous influences.
The Portuguese word Querela comes from Latin [Querella] and can be
translated into English as Complaint, Grievance, Lament.
