1. Effects of co-publishing Evolution in BioOne in today’s journal marketplace:a preliminary report Jason Price, PhD 2009-06-12 to SSE Council, Moscow Idaho
2. About me BA Ecology & Evolution UC Santa Barbara 1993 PhD EEB & MLS, Indiana U, 2003 Science Librarian, Claremont Colleges 2004- Head of Collections since 2008 Ejournal Package Analyst/Consultant 2006- SCELC consortium, 90 CA Private Coll./Institutes *BioOne Advisory board 2005 – present [First work directly with a Society]
3. Main Question What proportion of the decrease in institutional subscriptions to Evolution is due to co-publication in BioOne? - OR- Do the future benefits of remaining in BioOne outweigh the future cost in lost W-B subscriptions? (Very roughly, 85% of subs income is from Inst)
4. Sources of information 2008 publisher reports & Income statements Background knowledge and experience More work to do-- Need more detailed raw data from each party for ground level analysis – have some, but key pieces missing Have not yet requested/prior analyses from either party
5. Outline Overview of current (Institutional) journal marketplace Framework for evaluating effect of BioOne participation on W-B subscriptions Preliminary Observations & General recommendations Next steps?
6. Anatomy of the ‘Big (package) deal’ Libraries must maintain current subscribed title spend w/ +/- 5% annual price increase Libraries get access to publishers whole collection for small additional fee ~2-8% of added title list price Users unaware of access type (Subs. vs Added) New: Libraries get archival access to ENTIRE collection
7. Effects of the ‘Big (Package) Deal’ It no longer matters whether a title is Subscribed or added within a package deal Historical subscription profiles become stale Weak to no relationship b/w institutional subscription list and most used/important titles Subscription-based society remuneration becoming disconnected from library purchasing model Libraries are avoiding adding new subs. as much as possible Unprotected (non-packaged) titles are at risk of cancellation at the local level The strength of this affect is growing as proportion of locked-in journals grows, and budgets shrink
8. My General Opinions Society journal income should no longer be based solely on # of subscriptions Wider access pays off in the long run
9. [Remainder Confidential] Outline of analysis Relationship between BioOne & Direct Subscriptions Anecdotal Evidence Prospective analysis Retrospective analysis Comparative analysis General Recommendations Next steps
