Sustainable fishing?
Learning Objectives:
 I am learning about different types of fishing and why some types of fishing are
more harmful to the environment than others.
WALT:

 I will discuss different types of fishing in communities around the world
 I will debatethe pros and cons of large scale fishing
 I am developing my understanding of sustainability
Introduction/Main Teaching/Mental Oral Starter:
 Show chdn a plate of fish and chips on IWB. How many of them enjoy fish and chips? Do they
know how their fish is caught? Have any of the children been fishing themselves?
 Show the children the HSBC advert about fishing in China (one man, one boat, one bird).
 Show the children the footage of trawlermen bringing in a large catch of fish. Ask them to
discuss the similarities and differences between the two videos with their talk partners. What
might be the pros and cons of each method of fishing?
 Talk to the children about overfishing using an example e.g. cod reserves in the North Sea.
Explain that these are the fish often served in fish and chip shops! Give one child a small fishing
rod (or picture of fishing rod) and rest of the class pictures of fish. How many fish can the child
catch in 20 seconds? Next give half the class fishing rod and the rest pictures of fish. How
many fish can the fisher children (!) catch now?! What do they think would happen if the fisher
children had a huge net rather than a rod? Would this be sustainable? Could the fisher children
carry on fishing?
 Show the chdn the video of large dredging nets being dragged along the sea bed. What do they
think might be the problem with this? Brainstorm ideas.
 Talk with the children about why people fish with large scale nets if it is not sustainable

Activity:
 Children to think about the pros and cons of large scale fishing in mixed ability groups. Pictures of different kinds of people
associated with the fishing industry to be provided at tables.
 Children to note down what these individuals would think about large scale fishing and why in thought bubbles around them.
E.g. fishermen/women would want to continue their livelihood, but would also want fish stocks to last; consumers would want
cheap fish; what would the fish and other animals think?!
 Ask the children to share the thoughts of their person with the rest of the class through debate. E.g. consumers group would
debate with the fish and other animals, fishermen/women could debate with consumers or fish!
Plenary:
 Show the chdn the two video clips
again. Where do they think most large
scale fishing happens? (MEDCs/richer
countries or LEDCs/ poorer countries?)
 Why might poorer countries be more
unable to fish sustainably?
Introduction to the idea of countries
which rely on fishing as their main
industry.
