A Novel by
Clyde Deighton
Penny Loafer Press, LLC
Chapter One
I am a quiet man. I don’t mean to say that I’m a man of few words—
in fact, on more than one occasion, I’ve been accused of employing
more words than necessary to make a point. I’m a quiet man in the
sense that I’ve come to prefer a peaceful existence to the hassled maze
of the contemporary rat race. Recently that desire led me to return to
Geneva, Wisconsin, a backwater rural township where I’d spent seven
perfect summers during my youth.
I grew up in a Chicago working-class neighborhood. It wasn’t
heaven, but it had its good points. Summer entertainment consisted
of playing stickball in the streets and ring-a-levio in the alleys between
the rows of modest brick bungalows. Our house was near Bryant
Park, where my friends and I clambered up trees and hiked among
the scruffy bushes like bold explorers. Bryant also had a peach of a
swimming pool where we wiled away long afternoons as we swam,
held informal diving contests, and splashed and bothered all the
neighborhood girls who dared to invade our sacred territory or call us
morons.
When I reached the tender age of ten, my life changed
dramatically. That was the year my father stretched the family budget
to buy a vacation home in Wisconsin. It came with an acre of land,
thirty-some oak trees, a wood-sided shed, ivy-covered trellis, and
an old stone birdbath. Most importantly, it came with lake rights.
Our small white cottage was only a short hike from Lake Geneva,
