- 4. Impression for functional appliance differs by 2 important ways Areas where appliance components will contact soft tissues must be clearly delineated. Most appliances use contact with lingual mucosa to stimulate forward posturing, so usually this is the critical area. The impression must include the alveolar process bellow the lower molars if long lingual flanges are to be employed. The impression must not stretch & excessively display soft tissue in an area of contact with the appliance. This is critical when lip pads & buccal shields are planned.
