Impressions are negative replicas
Impressions should fully extend so that not
only the crown position & Inclination but also
the contour of the supporting alveolar bone
can be seen clearly.

Tray selected should include all erupted
molars
3mm clearance between teeth & tray
Impression material used- Alginate(common),
Rubber based impression material
Patient is seated upright & mandibular
impression made 1st preferably

Impression for functional appliance differs by 2
important ways
Areas where appliance components will contact soft tissues
must be clearly delineated. Most appliances use contact with
lingual mucosa to stimulate forward posturing, so usually this
is the critical area. The impression must include the alveolar
process bellow the lower molars if long lingual flanges are to
be employed.
The impression must not stretch & excessively display soft
tissue in an area of contact with the appliance. This is critical
when lip pads & buccal shields are planned. Too much
extension of the impression will result in pads & shields that
are too long & will cause soft tissue irritation & ulceration
when the appliance is worn.
