Day 0 learning and training-opening session_AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair_Oct2010_NMT
1. WELCOME TO
DAY “0H NOW I
KNOW!” LEARNING AND
TRAINING
-OPENING SESSION
AgKnowledge Africa Share Fair,
October 18th 2010
ILRI Campus, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
6. What is going on around YOU?
What sector
do you work
in?
Are there
changes
happening in
this sector?
What are the
changes
directing
your sector
towards?
Activity:
• Discuss with your neighbour about
your sectors and what is going on
• Take a minute to write down your
sector and what is going on.
7. Part II A call for greater knowledge sharing
and collaboration—but what is it?
8. Some lessons and responses
Need to involve
multiple
stakeholders to
develop
innovations
Lack of
connection
between research
and development
Information is
vital for decision-
making
Printed
publications are
limited form of
sharing
knowledge-need
• National initiatives e.g AGROS
• Tools for Participation and
interaction: e.g’s PRA, COPs
• Innovation systems and
Platforms/forums: e.g GFAR-
ICM4ARD
• Information systems/KM: e.g
WISARD
• Virtual and Web 2.0 tools
• Networks: e.g’s AGRIS/GFIS,
AgroWEB Network, ECORENA
• In-house, dedicated
KM/KS/ICT/Communication

The CIARD Vision
“To make public domain agricultural research
information and knowledge truly accessible to all”
My examples- my approaches
12. Your views on approaches
Where do
you come
from?
What
applications
should we
be doing?
What is
working and
should be
replicated?
What isn’t
working?
Activity:
• Think about what approaches you
know, believe in or use
• Share these with us- the good and
the bad! (To be noted down on a flip
chart)
22. Step 1:Think about key stages/activities
in your work
My Example-the Research Cycle
23. Lack of inclusion
of priorities ,needs
and realities from
the ground
Inadequate use
of other sources
of knowledge
Poor collaboration
with
stakeholders
during the
research
Limited
understanding
of how research
results can most
effectively be
made use of
Ineffective ways
of getting
knowledge to
target groups
Limited
opportunities for
learning within
research process
Step 2: What would you like to achieve, but is
lacking in knowledge sharing, collaboration for
each stage?
25. Step 4: Identify who to share, collaborate
and engage with at each stage…and their
capacity
Can they access and use the internet
Do you need to meet them face to fac
Do they read and write?
What languages do they use?
Other…
Example: Government
officials, farmers, other
researchers, etc
26. Activity: Let’s plan it for YOUR
context and activities
Each stage
of work
offers
different
opportunities
for
knowledge
sharing and
collaboration
.
It is
important to
be realistic
about the
capacity of
your context
and people
1. What are the stages of your work?
Map this out for yourself.
2. What issues do you have at each
stage of your work? Write them
down!
3. Turn these into goals-write them
down too
4. Who do you want to share,
collaborate and engage with in the
various stages?
27. Step 5: Look at the functionality of
various tools-some examples
• Joint work planning: Google Calendar, Docs, Sites
• Preparing a presentation or a proposal together:
Google Docs, Presentations
• Meeting online: chat, talk, conf calls, screen and
document sharing, chat, taking notes on a wiki
• Store project information in shared environment
• Share a reference collection: Mendeley
• Document the process; reuse project information;
share and solicit feedback from communities; publish
data not included in final peer-reviewed articles:
blogs, CC, social media/networks
28. What about for the tools in Day
0?
•Having discussions and feedback on topics
•Documenting and sharingBlogging
•Work planning
•Collaborative production of outputsCollaborative Writing
•Sharing references
•CollaboratingMendeley
•Sharing information about projects
•Monitoring and EvaluationVideo/Film
•Collecting information
•Sharing informationAudio/Radio
•Sharing information

•Effective planning meetings
F2F KS Methods
•Collect information from different people and sources
•Create visualizations for discussions and sharingGoogle Geo Tools

29. Step 6: Match the tools to your
stages and goals…keeping in mind
the people!

30. Think about the tools you will
explore today
Keep this in
mind as you
learn the
tools and
think about
the
functionality
of the tools
as you learn
them and
how you will
be able to
apply them
to the
particular
goals after
the training
Activity:
Write down the two tools you choose
to explore today
Think about and discuss the
functionality of those tools
Based on your work
framework(stages, issues, goals,
context and people)—where do you
think these tools can be used
Write them down next to particular
stages of work and the goals on your
32. The process
Identifying why you want to share knowledge,
what your goals for knowledge sharing are
and matching it to the tools
[Opening session 9-10-open to all]
Learning and trying out various tools and
methods for sharing knowledge
[Training session 10:30-12:30 and 2-4—sign

Making your content travel by seeing how to
make use of the various tools and methods
together

This day was organised by the CGIAR ICT-KM program and CIARD.Meant as a practical, hands-on day.You can get some training-but even if you know the approaches and tools you can learn new applications or experiences with using the tools.
We see a move away from previous approaches to a new set of ideas about the way in which we should tackle issues. We are excited to see the central role that agriculture has now been realised to play.
No longer enough to just do research ourselves without talking to stakeholders. We cannot do supply push—it is now about having a conversation!Dedicated program to focus on collaboration, creation and communication within ag research for development. ICT-KM program has grown out of a demand—and has supported a large number of Centres, projects and programs with f2f ks, use of ICTs and social media and more. It is supporting a new wave of conversations
Introduce concept of conversationAgreed not to tell-but to engage in conversations—lots of tools available for this
