Copra is obtained by drying coconut albumen, or flesh, until it loses most of its water content below 6%. Coconuts grow in bunches on coconut palm trees, which can produce their first crop at 6-8 years old and continue for 50-70 years. To farm coconuts, germinated coconuts are planted in rich soil with added salty sand and require little water. Mature coconuts are harvested when they fall naturally or are picked, then the dried albumen is detached to produce copra.
