DEFINITIONS- “ LEA DER SHIP ” “ It is the relationship in which one person, influences others to work together willingly on related tasks to attain that which the leader desires” “ The ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. It is the human factor that binds people together and motivates them towards goals” - Keith Davis
Continued….. “ It is the process of influencing the activities of an individual or a group towards the achievement of a goal in a given situation.” “ It is an influence process; the dynamics of which are a function of the personal characteristics of the leader and followers, and of the nature of the specific situations.”

AUTOCRATIC STYLE These leaders centralize power and decision making in them. They structure the complete work situation for their employees, who are supposed to do what they are told. The leaders take full authority and assume full responsibility. Continued…..
They assume complete responsibility Their behavior is typically negative based on threats & punishment. The behavior can be positive also as a leader can choose to give rewards to his employees. It is called benevolent-autocratic. Continued…..
Advantages… It provides strong motivation and reward for the leader. It permits quick decision making. It is the best style in emergencies. This style gives good results when one is dealing with unskilled employees.
Disadvantages… Most people dislike it. Frustration, dissatisfaction and fear develop easily . Employees do not involve their “self” in the organizational activities. Employees do not have the autonomy to work
PARTICIPATIVE STYLE It is the expression of leaders trust in the abilities of his subordinates. Leader believes that his people are equally desirous of contributing to the organization as he is. The leader decentralizes power and decision making. Continued…
Advantages… The leader and group act as one unit. Creativity and innovativeness of employees is not suppressed. Employees are given relative autonomy to work.
Disadvantages… This leadership style is useless in case of an emergency. The assumption of this style that the people have the skill and will to help organizational effort may not be always correct.
FREE REIN STYLE This style of leadership is considered to be the most extreme style. The leader plays a minor role. The leader does not take full authority. The leader does not assume full responsibility. Continued…
Advantages… There is decentralization of authority and responsibility. The employees are given complete autonomy to work. The employees get the opportunity to use their creativity and talent to the fullest. It provides greater job satisfaction to the employees.
Disadvantages… The leader plays a minor role. The leader fails to guide and motivate his employees. Too much of autonomy can lead to further problems in the organization.
