1. Aggregation Tools By Gerry Pearson For Introduction to Emerging Technology Course
2. Web 2.0 My objective is to be familiar with the tools, and applications of these, so I can help the instructors at our Technical College select tools that are appropriate Many of the instructors know very little about Web 2.0 Some are adamant about keeping “it” out of their classroom
3. Why this tool? Aggregation tools are a way to manage/control the amount of information The information is “pulled” in (I chose it) versus being pushed in such as email Aggregator collects the information from the web As a “newbie” and someone with low technical skills- I am overwhelmed!
4. RSS tools (really simple syndication or rich site summary) iGoogle Google Reader (Google alert…) NetVibes Pageflakes Many more from Tying it all Together article
5. Similarities All have options (widgets and gadgets) such as: calendar YouTube Weather To do list template News Chat with friends
6. My purpose I want to be able to get notices of new information on sites that I like Not all of my favorite sites have an RSS link I am looking for “strong tie” learning (G.Seimens) and therefore want to be selective
7. Signing Up I identified categories in which I wanted to collect information Tons of “stuff” arrived in my email box that was inappropriate (yikes! Stop, Stop…) Lesson- I don’t want the reader to search for me. I will tell it what sites I want it to keep up to date on
8. Affordances Access Keep up with people and information Aggregation Manage what comes into my email
9. Application It is a first step and will help me keep more current in adult learning, curriculum, instructional design Social bookmarking may be the next step A way to organize favorites Love sticky notes and highlighter features but when will I ever get back to read these?
10. More application How does Web 2.0 apply in a Technical College? Goals are to get people employment ready in a trade in 10 months or less Utilitarian view- specific knowledge and skills No time for exploration for most students Foundational knowledge, then Web 2.0 could be helpful
11. Adding an RSS feed to your website ? Website by Stephen Downeshttp://www.downes.ca/files/RSS_Educ.htm Introduction to RSS for Educational Designers Indicates that there are a few easy ways to put an RSS link on your website…
