1. Immigrants’ Hope:
Improving Families, Workplaces, and Communities Over Time
The best way to improve our future is to look at our past. Therefore, we
will be conducting a case study about immigration for the next month.
Esperanza Rising Virtual Quilt
Using www.VoiceThread.com, you will weave together Pam Munoz
Ryan’s words and your imagination to create a virtual quilt.
• You will listen to non-fiction and historical fiction texts daily to deepen
your background knowledge of immigration and gain tolerance for those
who have different experiences than you have had.
• You will read Esperanza Rising. As you read, you will reflect on the story
and record your ideas in writing and pictures. Small groups will meet to
discuss chapters on the following days (see below). Please complete your
reading before your group meets.
• You will speak about the novel in reading groups. When we have
completed the book, you will photograph your illustrations and upload
them to the VoiceThread website. You will then use your written
reflections to narrate your work using a web-camera. Your ideas should
be insightful and easy for the audience to understand.
• You will write a paragraph summary of each chapter and illustrate it.
Describe the main events and why they are significant to the plot. It is
your job as a reader to pick up the author’s clues and visualize the events
of a story. Include the page number and copy a favorite passage from the
chapter and explain why it caught your attention. Use proper mechanics:
grammar, spelling, and capitalization. Draw a picture to illustrate each
chapter. Explain any symbols or important items you drew.
• Classmates will view and comment on each other’s VoiceThreads, and
family members and friends will be able to view your work.
