Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

2. Introduction
As part of my A2 Media Studies coursework I had to create a music video and also
produce two ancillary products. The two ancillary products were to create a digipack and
a magazine advert for our music video. When combined with the video the two products
would act as a marketing campaign for our video. Below you can see a screenshot from
the music video, the front and back of my digipack and the magazine advert.

3. I applied Richard Dyer’s star
theory to attract my target
audience. I have depicted R-
Kelly as a “player” in the music
video and in the ancillary texts
through my choice of images.
This trait is often misconceived
as a “cool” trait that many
young men aspire to achieve.
Therefore by giving R-Kelly a
relatable trait that the audience
share or admire more people
will buy into our product.

6. Why is synergy important?
The consistency of the style and images throughout my three texts ensures that my
product markets itself effectively to my target audience and gives a clear indication that
they are marketing the same product.

7. What magazine would feature my advert?
I would expect my magazine advert to feature on magazines such as VIBE
or XXL which have both previously featured R.Kelly in them on the cover
and in articles. By featuring it in either of these two R&B magazines I
know my product will be targeted to the right audience as these are the
readers that would be interested in my music video.

8. What record label would sign him?
R.Kelly is currently signed to Jive Records
however I believe another suitable label
that would distribute my music video would
be Atlantic Records this is because they
have signed people like Trey Songz who is
also an R&B artist that sings very sexual
songs much like “In the Kitchen”.

9. Where would my music video be seen?
Due to the explicit theme I
have restricted when my
music video would be shown.
However my music video
would be shown on
programmes like MTV (after
watershed)
