2. Yoga
• The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit
"yuj," which means to yoke or Yoga.
• The roots of yoga can be traced back over
5,000 years.
• It was developed in Northern India by the
Indus Sarasvarti
• Yoga is part metaphysics and part philosophy,
with a strong physical base.

3. The Eight Limbs of Yoga
• 1. Yama: Self-control or restraint from violence, lying,
excessiveness, stealing, and coveting
• 2. Niyama: Stresses things one should do-purity,
contentment, austerity, study of the sacred texts,
living with awareness of the divine
• 3. Asana: Physical exercises, postures
• 4. Pranayama: Breathing exercises
• 5. Pratyahara: Drawing inward
• 6. Dharana: Concentration
• 7. Dhyana: Meditation
• 8. Samadhi: Realization (Tree.com, Inc., 2011).

4. Vinyasa Flow
• The style of yoga most familiar to those in the Western
world, consisting of the practice of asanas or poses in
order to reach a meditative state, is a medieval
development of Raja yoga known as Hatha yoga (The
Yoga Centre Glasgow, 2011)
• This yoga is a version of Hatha yoga
• Vinyasa symbolises flowing dynamic yoga
• Focuses on the physical, postures are linked
• This Yoga has a fast paced fitness approach
• Vi means in a special way, Yasa means to place

5. Who
• I will participate in the occupation of Yoga
• With others in a group at clubs and societies and
alone at home
• The Bagavad Gita’s ancient philosophy with a
strong physical base (Tree.com, Inc, (2011).
• Yoga-glo teachers who are masters will teach me.
• Tiffany Cruickshank, Dice Ida Klien, Sianna
Sherman.
• Iyengar Yoga teacher at Clubs and Societies.

6. What
• Taxonomies of yoga are vast and have changed
over time
• Vedic priests refined and documented their
practices of yoga in texts such as the Bhagavad-
Gita.
• Patanjali's Yoga Sutra systematically presented
yoga.
• He said Yoga begins when thinking stops
• I choose to do Vinyasa Flow

• Now in this age Yoga has developed and has branches
• My own level of Yoga at this time is as an amateur

• Motivated by PO11 class, to increase knowledge of yoga, strong, relax
• Would like to improve my skill level.
• Visible may be changes in physical appearance, invisible inner peace/calm.
• On a Yoga mat in a room that is quiet and peaceful

8. Why
• To understand more about yoga
• Build more strength and flexibility
• Increase balance and release tension
• To redistribute energy
• To improve biomechanics because of injuries
• To improve on technique, skill level
