Thailand has been involved in the milk production industry for over 20 years
In 2004 there were 408,350 heads of dairy cattle in Thailand The cattle number increased from 2003 at the rate of 10 %.
The average dairy farm size is 17.5 heads producing 10-12 kg. of raw milk per cow per day.
Most of the cattle breed is Holstein Friesian(HF) crossbred at blood level higher than 75 % HF.
The total raw milk production of the country is 800,000 tons/year. The annual rate of production is constantly increased at 10 % while the rate of milk consumption increased only at 6 %.
The raw milk produced is mostly sold to small cooperatives which operates small milk collecting center. . Approximately 97% of Thailand raw milk production is used to produce ready to drink milk.
There are 75 ready to drink milk factories
Average cost of milk production of the farmers is 8.30 Baht/kg. The raw milk farm gate price is 11.40 Baht/kg while the price sold to factories is 12.50 Baht/kg.
The milk consumption of Thai people is not enough to supply the consumption which increased at 15 % from 2003 to 2004.
In 2004, Thailand imported milk powder and other products about 18,000 million Baht. The increasing rate was 14.7 %
Thailand also exported dairy products to neighboring countries about 12,000 million Baht. The increasing rate was 18 %.
Thai dairy cattle were exported to countries in this region as well because they believe that the cattle which were bred in Thailand are already adopted to tropical climate and environments.
Thailand dairy industry technologies have not much change for years because most of the dairy farm is small farmer and milk collecting and transporting business mostly operated by small cooperatives.
