- One of the greatest things about the internet is the ability to find information both fast and easy. The trick is being able to hold onto and access the information and resources at anytime from anywhere. I believe social bookmarking provides us with the means to do this and that is why I am referring to it as the internet breadcrumb trail. As educators we want to be more successful than Hansel and Gretel’s attempt to return home using a trail of breadcrumbs. This presentation is a brief overview of the benefits of social bookmarking.
- Bookmarking is a term used to describe the ability to save links to your favorite websites to the computer that you are using at that time. I refer to this as the old way because I feel it is useless and outdated (like the car in the picture) because often times we save so many of these bookmarks to our computers that they become hard to find and use. Not to mention, we can only access these bookmarks from the computer we saved them to. Social Bookmarking is a free internet based tool that allows us to tag and save our favorite websites, or other online resources to a bookmarking website that can be accessed anytime, and anywhere from an internet capable computer or device. This new interactive way of bookmarking provides us with a variety of features and benefits any teacher would love and benefit from.
- So,Why Social Bookmarking:Well, no more spending hours searching for worthwhile content for your own staff development or interests, or student projects and resources.No more losing your favorite websites because you have so many you can’t find the ones you need when you need them.No more having to use the same computer to access saved websites. You can access your websites from home or school, your desktop or your laptop, at a conference, on vacation or anywhere for that matter.
- Some of the benefits of social bookmarking or things you can do are:The ability to tag bookmarks, which is add searchable keywords to them.The ability to categorize or group your bookmarks by topic.The ability to search your bookmarks and others by popularity, or human selected keywords or tags. The ability to share your bookmarks with students, colleagues, friends, or anyone that shares the same interests as you. Network with people that have similar interests by joining groups or interacting or collaborating with other social bookmarking website members. Websites can be viewed by the number of people that have viewed them, their rank or popularity and the number of people that have also bookmarked them.The ability to comment on your bookmarks or the bookmarks of others are all benefits of Social Bookmarking.
