REVIEW Word Study/Spelling articles: Although the article you read focused on K-2, word study spans the grade levels. Focus on generalizations (remember –able, -ible?) The article from the Houston Chronicle seems to suggest that spelling doesn’t matter anymore if kids aren’t taking traditional spelling tests, but in reality, spelling still does matter and we’ve found better ways to support kids in spelling and word knowledge, especially when they are writing independently. Many kids are very successful with spelling in the traditional way … memorization. But, are they able to spell when they write independently? Announcements Topic and Rationale paper due last week. By MARCH 2nd: LITERATURE REVIEW MATRIX DUE (no class meeting) By MARCH 16th – DRAFT OF PAPER due to Moodle Mary Lois Staton Reading/Language Arts Conference: Feb. 16th - How was it? Submit extra credit papers ASAP. Scholastic Book Orders … books are in. New brochures available.
APA style There is no use hiding …
APA can be your friend.
Writing Mini-Lesson REVISE…. 1 “Tip 1 talks about how you have to determine what your students know about the alphabetic, pattern, and meaning layers of the orthography.”   “The first investigation talked about the students misspelling their words in their journals and the teacher mad the spelling list focus on the misspelled words.” 2 “The article explains how you should always ….” “You should also be sure to ….”
I have 3-5 articles that look promising … now what?
Start reading them Determine “fit” with your topic (3) What type of article is this? Is it peer-reviewed? It is scholarly? Is it a research study? (5) Take notes (6) Add to the literature review matrix
Try not to get frustrated … This takes time and you will run into “dead ends.”
Literature Review Matrix Citation Include full citation Overview; Research design/article type Qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, descriptive, experiment, case study, survey research, etc. Describe the research context Where did the study take place? Also note the age level and number of participants and the duration of the study Findings Be specific. What did the study find related to the research question? What are the implications? What are the recommendations? Notes Include clarification of important terms/definitions, note key references/citations, note key graphics (tables, charts, etc.), note key quotes, your personal reaction, etc. Include page numbers as necessary http://moodle.aos.ecu.edu/
Dana article literature review matrix http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/prospective/education/theneweducator/upload/4th-article.pdf
Practice She’s My Best Reader
Examine the citations and reference lists of good articles
Once your matrix is complete … It is your “cheat sheet.” Look for patterns, varying perspectives, discrepancies, common findings, etc. You want to present a “full picture” in your paper. No opinions yet … just the facts right now. What does the research say about your topic? Pull it together. Look for topics, subtopics, etc. THINK! Draft an outline or graphic organizer.
Writing your draft Write a synthesis of the content of all of the items noted in the literature review matrix. Be careful that you don’t simply restate each reference’s findings. Work to synthesize the information in a cohesive, organized manner that demonstrates your depth of knowledge regarding this topic. Next, write a reflection associated with your study of this topic. In your reflection, include the following: what you have learned and why study of this topic has been especially meaningful to you. Include an APA style reference list of at least ten references from scholarly journals at the end of your paper. The entire paper should be 10-12 pages, including references. Incorporate elements of effective written expression within your paper: good organization, clarity and explicitness of your written content yet sufficient elaboration and explanation of detail, correct grammar, spelling, punctuation.
