Now that you have completed the “Path Builder” and the six “Skills Checks”, your “Course Home” page should look like the screen shot above when you sign into your labs. Now you will begin to work on your labs at your own pace. To get started and to assure that you are completing all of your labs, I suggest you do the following: from this page, click on the “Writing” tab in the left hand column. Under that tab, you should see “Learning Path” and “Completed Work”. Click on “Learning Path”. See next slide.
Once you click on “Learning Path”, your page will look like above. Notice the orange box. This box is no different than your labs. It is not “extra” practice or work. It is your labs based on where you left off in your previous session. If you follow my instructions, you will complete the labs as you should. Notice the “Study by Module” link right below the orange box. This is where I suggest you go to work on your labs each time you sign in to work. Click that link and see next slide.
When you click the “Study by Module” link, it opens up to all eight modules for the lab. In each module, the topics are listed. If you see a yellow star in the right hand corner of any of the boxes, the module has been mastered and no further work is necessary. If you see a pencil, you have work that needs to be completed. For example purposes, I will click on the “Basic Grammar” module. See the next slide.
When you click into a module, it will show you all of the topics for that module. Notice the yellow stars above. If you see yellow stars, again, this means that you mastered those topics. If all of the topics are mastered, the module box will have a yellow star as well. The pencils are the topics that must be completed. This is where you need to pay close attention. Notice that the first topic has yellow stars. I do not need to work on this topic because it is mastered. Go to one with a pencil. I will click on the first topic with a pencil beside it. See next slide.
Now notice that there are no stars in this topic. This is because I need to complete the topics in the right hand column in order to master the topic in the left hand column. However, there are a few things you will want to know. The Overviews and Animations are important and very helpful. The Overviews are notes on the topics and can be printed for studying purposes and to answer questions as you do the exercises. These do not have to be completed in order to master the topics, but they do help, especially if the topic is tough for you.Now notice the rest of the exercises: Recall 1 and 2, Apply, and Post Test. In order to master a topic, you must make an 80 or higher on the Post test. You are allowed two attempts at the Post test. If you choose to skip to the Post Test to master a topic, I have no problem with it; however, if you do not pass one with an 80 or higher, it will lock you out and notify me to reset the topic. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION: I will NOT reset the topic if you have not completed ALL of the Recall and Apply exercises to show that you made an attempt at learning the material for that topic. If you happen to skip to the Post Test and pass that topic, then good for you! You may move on to another topic in the module. If you complete every exercise and still fail to master the topic, I will reset the topic so that you can get mastery. I am not here to see you fail! I want you to do well and learn. When you complete the topics in a module, the box will move to the bottom link. Your goal is to complete ALL eight modules by the deadline at the end of the semester. You have plenty of time, but if you procrastinate, you will get behind and have a very hard time catching up before the deadline. So, please pace yourself. You may work on your labs in any order you choose, but you are not done until all topics are mastered. I will keep you posted throughout the semester and will post reminders every week to work on labs. You MUST sign into your labs at least ONCE every week to complete an assignment.
The next two slides will show you another way to enter into your labs. To get to the above screen from your “Course Home” page, click the “Learning Path” tab in the middle (between “Assignments Due” and “Announcements” Tabs just below the “Browser Check” link). On this page, you may also click inside the box just below “What should I do next?” This will take you to the next slide. However, if you click the blue box that says “Next Activity,” you will go to the next assignment in the orang box I was telling you about earlier. This is not a problem, but it will not be as easy to see what you have completed in your labs until you become a little more familiar with how it works. There are many entrances, and all of the activities are part of your labs, but the two ways I have shown here will lead you directly to the “Study by Module” boxes. See next slide.
Clicking on the white bar as instructed in the previous slide will guide you to the above slide. This is just another entrance to the “Study by Modules” page. Remember, you may enter at any point you wish; these two are just suggestions until you become more familiar with the lab.
