5. 星期(xīng qī) – days of the week
• To say the days of the week in Chinese is an easy task, as
Chinese names for the days of the week are based on a
simple numerical sequence.
• 星期(xīng qī) means week;literally a “star period”. To say
the individual days, we put a number after 星期;
星期 + numbers = weekdays
Examples: 星期一 Monday
星期二 Tuesday (etc.)
• The only exception is Sunday, which is either 星期日 or 星
期天. 日 is used more in books or newspapers while 天 is
used more for talking.
• Note: There are other two ways to express weeks and days: 周(zhōu)
and 礼拜(lǐ bài). Both of these have the day number appended in the
same way as for 星期.
• Although there are three different words for “week” in
Chinese, we focus on the official term for “week”, which
is 星期 (xīng qī) in this lesson.
