• It was the first school in DC’s Ward 8 
Community to be remodeled in 2010 
• Recipient of the 2012 President’s Committee 
on the Arts and Humanities Turnaround Arts 
Initiative as a result they have been visited by: 
• FLOTUS, Michelle Obama and Kerry 
Washington in May, 2013 for the “Get Up and 
Move” campaign 
• YoYo Ma, December, 2012 worked with 
students on a musical collaboration

IDENTIFYING PARTS OF A PLANT 
Guided Inquiry process 
• Open-Mrs. James discussed days 
objectives 
• Immerse-reviewed with student 
research process and handed out 3 
sticky notes per student 
• Explore- played video from 
www.makemegenius.com about 
parts of the plant 
What is research? 
Play video
IDENTIFYING PARTS OF A PLANT, 
CONT’D 
Guided Inquiry Process 
• Identify- students watched video 
and took notes about each plant 
part and its function asking 
questions for clarification 
• Create- upon completion of video 
and “KWL” discussion, students 
drew a picture depicting their 
interpretation of the parts of a plant 
and their functions
OBSERVATIONS 
According to Grimes in Beyond Sticky Notes: Using Digital Tools and Resources 
to Teach Comprehension Strategies, she suggests a move away from the 
physical sticky note because “it limits students to a single means of action and 
expression.”(300). 
• In a environment with limited resources, I think the use of sticky notes was 
appropriate because it taught note-taking skills as well how to separate 
specific pieces of information into categories that while functioning together 
are very different. 
• The use of the notes were just one aspect of the guided inquiry process, it 
was not the end result merely a link in the knowledge chain that students 
were expected to pull from when creating their pictures. 
• So even though the note itself was a single form of expression it was used to 
create something more dynamic.

IDENTIFYING PARTS OF A PLANT, CONT’D Guided Inquiry Process • Identify- students watched video and took notes about each plant part and its function asking questions for clarification • Create- upon completion of video and “KWL” discussion, students drew a picture depicting their interpretation of the parts of a plant and their functions
  • 12. OBSERVATIONS According to Grimes in Beyond Sticky Notes: Using Digital Tools and Resources to Teach Comprehension Strategies, she suggests a move away from the physical sticky note because “it limits students to a single means of action and expression.”(300). • In a environment with limited resources, I think the use of sticky notes was appropriate because it taught note-taking skills as well how to separate specific pieces of information into categories that while functioning together are very different. • The use of the notes were just one aspect of the guided inquiry process, it was not the end result merely a link in the knowledge chain that students were expected to pull from when creating their pictures. • So even though the note itself was a single form of expression it was used to create something more dynamic.
