This project provides a transportation hub for the greater Miami area. In October of 2009 FIU students visited this project to see its construction and design. The students witnessed the construction for the future interconnectivity of Miami’s transportation system. This project will connect all modes of transportation in Miami. This field trip was a 3 hour event in which the participants visited the Cemex plant in Okeechobee. The participants gathered in the conference room for lunch and a presentation on the plant’s operations and the excavation issues pertaining to South Florida. After the presentation, a tour of the plant was given. This tour took us around the entire site in Cemex vans to see the actual process. The participants witnessed the mining, transporting, and sorting of different sized aggregates. The field trip provided an opportunity for the students to see how concrete aggregates are made and the massive stock piles needed to sustain construction in an urbanized area. This society helps aspiring Hispanic Civil Engineers to achieve their career goals. The CAACE hosted an event in FIU to recruit younger members into its society. This event was a critical part of the semester; it provided networking opportunities for ASCE members of UM and FIU. The CAACE board also explained the status of the job market in South Florida. Food and beverages were served in the event and several students joined the CAACE. Many of the professionals of the board of the CAACE are partners, associates, and co-founders of engineering firms in Miami. This event allowed students to make contact with entrepreneurs and higher-level management; providing a chance to ask questions concerning long-term career goals. One of the 50 FIU student members received a scholarship that night sponsored by the CAACE Activity Assessment: This event was successful. No Project Abstract: (Provide a brief description of the project) On Saturday November 21st the Engineering Center at FIU hosted the Bridge Design Seminar for Miami-Dade Public School (MDPS). Stephanie Strange, the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Retention at FIU, coordinated with Ava D. Rosales, the Instructional Supervisor for Secondary Education for MDPS, in order to organize the event and recruit volunteers. Among the volunteers were members from the FIU student chapter of ASCE. Many students, teachers, and parents were present to hear Valerie Bottaioli’s and Rodolfo Tobon’s presentation on bridge design as well as Meredith V. Johnson’s and Lillian Marrero’s presentation on Water Conservation. Teachers and students demonstrated their enthusiasm and participation by asking many practical questions on the rules of the competition, methods of assembly, and truss design for the bridges. Overall, it was a great experience to share with the next potential generation of engineers.
