HAPPY@WORK
OUR
MOTIVATION
Motivation of the Project
• Working life reality in Hong Kong and its potential harm to
individual workers as well as employers
Average working week for Hong Kong employees is 49.6
hours
82.5% of respondents said they suffered stress from
work (Work and Life Balance Survey 2008)
27% of people took sick leave in order to recover from
working long hours
Presenteeism (less productive at work) accounts for
more aggregate productivity loss than absenteeism
•
•
•
•
Motivation of the Project
• Internationally, more and more employers are paying
attention to the psychological well-being of their
employees
Individuals’ psychological capital (just like
economic and human capital) can be
developed
Workers will become more resilient, confident, and
happier
Employers will enjoy higher productivity and morale,
lower turn-over and positive return-on-investment
•
•
•
Motivation of the Project
• Compared with U.S. average, a psychologically healthy
workplace has:
Lower employee turnover (11% vs. 36%)
Fewer employees reporting work stress (24% vs.
41%),
Higher employee satisfaction (80% vs. 70%).
•
•
•
• We wanted to design a program based on international
evidence, and tailored for local needs
=> Happy@Work!
HAPPY@WORK
POSITIVE PSYCH & WORKPLACE
Positive Psych & Workplace
• Traditional psychology : problem-focused & emphasizes
on minimizing or solving the problems
Positive psychology : focusing on exploring the
potentials and strengths of individuals
By nurturing their strengths, workers are expected to be
more resilient to work challenges
•
•
 Improving individual well-being & work productivity at the
same time
Positive Psych & Workplace
• Happy@Work is developed based on the theoretical
framework of positive psychology
Includes skills that help people to set and execute
effective goals, view challenges in optimistic ways,
enhance self-confidence
Useful in improving work productivity, enhancing
work performance, relieving work-related stress
Modify such psychological interventions into an online
format  cater the needs of the busy working population
•
•
•
