NEXT Conference is a global conference organized by SparkLabs in order to
broaden our vision beyond the current world and into the future.
Sparklabs is the premier startup accelerator in Korea that was founded by
entrepeneurs for entrepeneurs. All of our founders are entrepreneurs who have
built companies in Korea and the U.S. We have endured the ups and downs of
entrepreneurship, successes and failures, and have developed a strong desire to
help out the next generation of Korea’s entrepreneurs.
SparkLabs focuses on cultivating and empowering Korean startups to go abroad.
In the same spirit, SparkLabs wants to bring the best minds and most
innovative people to Korea.
We want to enhance Korea’s already creative culture with visionaries, investors,
corporate leaders and entrepreneurs from other parts of the globe for the first time

Startups must first and foremost pursue “innovation,” which means something
that is different from the current or is original and differentiated.
NEXT Conference aims to createa brighter, more creative future.
To achieve this, NEXT Conference invites experts from around the world
who actively translate innovative ideas into actions in various areas and
parts of our lives. Through meeting these leaders who are creating

the world. Spencer Reiss, a contributing editor at Wired Magazine, interviews Ray Ozzie in this session.
Search’s Next Domain
The explosive popularity of social media and mobile applications is forcing people to search for information more actively. This session looks
at new search services that have emerged recently. Pat Kinsel (CEO of Spindle) and Tomer Kagan (CEO of Quixey) will forecast the future of
search. Catherine Shu, a Techcrunch writer, is the moderator.
Future of Education
The technical development of the Internet and new devices demands a more efficient way to educate children. This discussion session is on
the future of education. Frank Meehan (CEO of Kuato Studio who used to be on the board of Siri and Spotify), Gene Wade (CEO of University
Now, the first online university in the US) and Jeremy Johnson (CSO of 2U, a company that provides online education in partnership with the

Ray Ozzie is an independent software entrepreneur and pioneer in social productivity, an area more known in the field as Computer-
Supported Cooperative Work. He recently founded and serves as CEO of Talko, a startup focused on a new generation of mobile
communications apps and services. Through late 2010 he was Chief Software Architect of Microsoft, the company’s most senior
technical strategy & architecture role previously held by Bill Gates. Ozzie came to Microsoft in 2005 through the acquisition of Groove
Networks, a company he founded in 1997 to focus on software and services for small-team dynamic collaboration. Prior to Groove,
in 1984 Ozzie founded and led Iris Associates, the creator and developer of Lotus Notes. A decade later, Iris was acquired by Lotus
and then by IBM. Under his leadership during that period, Lotus Notes grew to be used for communication & social productivity by
hundreds of millions at most major enterprises worldwide. Before creating Notes, he worked on 1-2-3 and Symphony at Lotus, on
VisiCalc and TK!Solver at Software Arts, and on operating systems at Data General. Ozzie studied computer science & engineering
at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he has been honored as a distinguished alumnus. It was there where he first
took in the significance of online community and social interactive systems as a systems developer on the seminal PLATO project.
Honored as one of seven Windows Pioneers by Microsoft, Ozzie was named Person of the Year by PC Magazine, and has been
inducted into the Computer Museum Industry Hall of Fame. He has been honored as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer
and has received numerous awards including the IEEE Computer Society’s W. Wallace McDowell Award and the SDForum Visionary
Award. In 2004 Ozzie was inducted as a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and in 2010 he was named as a fellow of
theAmericanAcademyofArts&Sciences.HecurrentlyservesontheboardofdirectorsoftheElectronicPrivacyInformationCenter
(EPIC), has served as a member of the National Research Council’s Computer Science and Telecommunications Board, and was a
member of the NRC committee that produced the landmark CRISIS report on the societal impact of cryptography.
Contributing Editor Spencer Reiss joined Wired in San Francisco in 1996. A former a Newsweek correspondent in Asia, Africa, the
Mid East and Latin America, he focuses on the global impact of innovation, ranging from telecommunications and new media to
energy and the environment. His numerous Wired bylines include cover stories on Bill Joy, Rupert Murdoch, and Richard Branson,
along with “Why $5 Gas is Good for America.” In his spare time Spencer directs IGNITION, Business Insider’s annual conference
on the future of digital media. He also reviews books about technology and business for The Wall Street Journal. A graduate of
Dartmouth College and Columbia University, he lives in Lakeville, Connecticut.

Pat was previously a PM in Microsoft FUSE Labs, responsible for incubating new concepts and bringing them to market. In this role,
he led development of Docs.com. Launched by Mark Zuckerberg at F8 in 2010, Docs.com was a collaboration between Microsoft and
Facebook to bring Microsoft Office Online to the Facebook audience. Before Docs.com, Pat built several social applications within
Microsoft Startup Labs and helped to bring Bing Social Search to market in October 2009.
Tomer is the CEO and co-founder of Quixey, The Search Engine for Apps. Quixey provides app search technology to the world’s
largest carriers, manufacturers, search engines and browsers. Tomer also sits on the board of the Singularity Institute for Artificial
Intelligence, and is an advisor to Innovation Endeavors and MuckerLab SeedFund. Prior to Quixey, Tomer was the founder and CEO
of Your Logo Here, a branding solutions provider for companies such as Google and Slide. A lifelong entrepreneur, he founded his
first company, a custom apparel printing business, in college to pay his own tuition. He has a degree in Molecular, Cellular and
Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Catherine Shu is a TechCrunch writer based in Taipei. She started her career in New York City at the Wall Street Journal Online and
Barron’s Online before moving to Asia. After studying Mandarin Chinese, Catherine put her language skills to the test by covering
the design industry and culture in Taiwan’s capital for the Taipei Times. Her other journalism experience includes an investigative
reporting internship at the Village Voice and numerous freelance writing gigs. Catherine graduated from Sarah Lawrence College
and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism

Frank Meehan is Founder and CEO of Kuato Studios, a next generation AI company focused on learning and gaming, backed by SRI
International – the creators of Siri. He is also EIR with Horizons Ventures, Li Ka-shing’s private VC firm, and was a board director
at Spotify, Siri, Affectiva, Bitcasa and Fixmo. Currently on the boards of Summly, Desti, Ginger and Doubletwist. Originally a coder/
troubleshooter with Ericsson, Frank has worked in mobile since 1996 in Asia, Europe and the US.
Gene Wade has spent most of his adult life focused on helping to ensure that everyone has access to high quality education. He
believes education is the solution to many of the biggest challenges facing people and societies around the world. Gene is the CEO
of UniversityNow, a social venture headquartered in San Francisco that operates two online universities: Patten University and New
Charter University. They are the first US online universities that are fully-accredited, self-paced and that offer affordable, pay-as-
you-go tuition models. In addition, University Now’s schools operate on a cutting-edge, adaptive learning platform that makes the
learning experience engaging and fun for both students and faculty. Prior to founding UniversityNow, Gene was co-founder & CEO
of Platform Learning, a tutoring company that served tens of thousands of low-income students throughout the United States.
He was also co-founder & CEO of LearnNow, a school management company that managed charter schools and public schools
throughout the United States and was sold to Edison Schools where he was an Executive Vice President. Prior to becoming an
education entrepreneur, he was a corporate attorney. Gene has an MBA from The Wharton School, a J.D. from Harvard Law School
and a B.A. from Morehouse College. As a serial education entrepreneur, Gene has been profiled by media, including Fast Company
and Forbes Magazine. Prior to launching UniversityNow, Gene shared his personal story and vision for UniversityNow as a speaker
at TEDx San Francisco’s Salon on Higher Education: “Building the World’s Most Affordable and Accessible Private University.”

With the exception of a brief (and ultimately misguided) foray into politics during college, Jeremy is a lifelong technology
entrepreneur with a passion for leveraging the interwebs to advance and enhance the way people interact. He founded his first
company, a marketplace for virtual currency, at 15 and his second, a social network around the college admissions process, at 21
while a student at Princeton University. Having raised funding contingent on him taking time off to run it, he left Princeton to pursue
theventureand,twoyearslater,negotiateditsacquisitionbyZinch.In2008,at24,Jeremyco-founded2UwithJohnKatzman,founder
of the Princeton Review, to explore the final frontier of online higher education. At 2U, he’s worn multiple hats, including Chief
Technology Officer (2008-2009), Chief Marketing Officer (2010-2012) and, most recently Chief Strategy Officer. Outside of 2U, Jeremy
is a friend and lover of all things “start-up.” He serves on the board of the Young Entrepreneur Council, an organization which seeks
to combat youth unemployment and underemployment through entrepreneurship, and is an active angel investor and advisor to a
small,selectgroupoftechnologyventuresonbothcoasts.HehaslecturedatPrinceton,PaceandFordham,andhasbeenfeaturedon
NBC, ABC, FOX and CNBC. Finally, an avid foodie, Jeremy may be the best possible person to ask for a restaurant recommendation.
If he isn’t working late into the night with his (incredible) team, he can likely be found exploring the culinary landscape of whatever
strange land he finds himself in. In 2012, Jeremy was named to both the Inc Magazine and Forbes 30 under 30 lists.
Zach Seward is senior editor of Quartz, a global business news venture from Atlantic Media, where he guides editorial strategy
and leads a team of journalists focused on visual storytelling. He previously worked at The Wall Street Journal, first as a reporter
covering education and health, then as the newspaper’s first editor of outreach and social media. Earlier, he covered education and
healthintheJournal’sBostonbureau.ZachalsoanadjunctprofessoratNYU’sArthurL.CarterJournalismInstitute,teachingaclass
on digital-journalism skills to master’s students in the Studio 20 program. In 2010, he taught social media at Columbia University
GraduateSchoolofJournalism.Beforethat,ZachhelpedstarttheNiemanJournalismLab,wherehewasanassistanteditor,covering
the media industry and innovation in online journalism. Zach attended Harvard College, majored in African-American studies, and

Pavan is a serial entrepreneur and angel investor who enjoys working on great ideas with great teams. His investments include
Neoteris (acquired by Juniper), myCFO (acquired by Harris), Sigaba (acquired by Proofpoint), Benu, Infoaxe and Trackle (where
he was the founding CEO). Previously, he was the Chairman and CEO of Cendura Corporation which he co-founded in 2002. He
grew the company into one of the market leaders for data center automation software with an installed base that included several
Fortune500companies.CendurawasacquiredbyCA(formerlyComputerAssociates)in2006.Priortothat,heco-foundedHealtheon
(now WebMD [WBMD]) in 1996 along with Jim Clark, founder of Silicon Graphics & Netscape Communications, and served as its
Chief Technology Officer and General Manager/EVP of its Internet Operations. In his General Management role, he was responsible
for WebMD’s entire suite of products including its Internet-based ehealth services. During his tenure, Pavan led the company’s
transformation from a concept to the worlds largest e-health company approaching a billion dollars in annual revenues, over eight
thousand employees and several billion in market capitalization. Pavan’s role was extensively profiled in the bestseller “The New
New Thing” by Michael Lewis. Prior to WebMD, Pavan worked at Silicon Graphics, where he was the General Manager for the
company’s Interactive Media Group and was responsible for deploying Time Warner, Inc.’s Interactive TV project in Orlando, Florida.
The Time Warner project is widely recognized as the most prominent and sophisticated ITV system ever created and has been the
foundation of several advanced technologies and companies (eg. Tivo). Pavan holds a B.S.E.E. from the Indian Institute of Technology
(Kanpur) and an M.S.C.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Pavan serves on several Corporate Boards and Advisory
Boards. He also served on the board of the US India Business Council from 1999-2009. He is a member of the Band of Angels and
TIE Angels.
Kai Huang is a co-founder of video game publisher RedOctane and was President and CEO from 1999 to 2009. RedOctane was the
publisher of Guitar Hero, which many consider to be the most influential video game of the decade. Guitar Hero became one of a
handful of billion-dollar video game franchises in history and the third largest after Mario and Madden NFL. RedOctane, co-founded
by brothers Charles and Kai Huang, launched the world’s first online game rental service in 1999. In 2005, the company published
Guitar Hero, which went on to become the fastest growing video game franchise ever to $1B in sales. RedOctane was acquired by
Activision in 2006. Prior to RedOctane, Kai was co-founder and CEO of Adux Software, a software company developing solutions for
the server appliance market. Adux Software was sold in 1999. Prior to this, he was a consultant with Accenture where he worked
with Fortune 500 clients in the area of supply chain management.

Dr. Catherine Mohr is currently the Director of Medical Research at Intuitive Surgical, where she develops new surgical procedures
and evaluates new technologies for improving surgical outcomes. An expert in the fields of robotic surgery and sustainable
technologies, Dr. Mohr is passionate about realizing the potential benefit that appropriately applied technologies can have in our
society. She has had numerous articles published and been featured in the news many times.
As a TV & radio show host, producer, columnist, content creator, and consultant, Susan Lee MacDonald’s passion for bridging and
cultivating understanding between East and West has led her to working on numerous projects and programs on both sides of
the Pacific. In her latest role as TV talk show host for Arirang TV’s award winning program, The INNERview, Susan has helped to
showcase the lives of amazing people and tell their stories to a global audience in 188 countries. Directly involved in every phase of
production, her hands-on approach has attracted the attention of industry executives who call upon her as a consultant for new and
existing programs, and Susan gladly shares her expertise in media, interviewing, language and production with new producers and
writers.Fromherbackgroundworkinginfinanceandconsultingtolaterincludemediaandeducation,Susanhasusedherextensive
NE Asia regional knowledge and expertise in cross-cultural communications, PR, and leadership training for public and private
organizations in the US and Korea and as spokesperson for educational institutions and organizations. She has served as Executive
Director of The Padma Institute, LLC and worked as an advisor and consultant to several prominent organizations and individuals
in media, politics, education and finance in the US and Korea. An avid hiker, on her days off, you might meet her on many trails
throughout Korea or the US or see her dancing and karaoke-ing to Journey and Queen after work. Susan volunteers at the US Army
Garrison Yongsan for the Public Affairs Office, and also arranges groups of disadvantaged children and adults where she enlists
volunteers to teach ESL in Seoul. Susan received her Master’s degree in Education (EdM) in Human Development and Psychology
from Harvard University, and she also holds a BA in Political Science & French Literature from Columbia University, and an MA in
Korean Studies from Seoul National University.

from the Paris Graduate School of Management in 1992. He is also a member of the luxury retail committee of the French Chamber

was acquired by Netscape Communications in 1997 for US$180 million. In Sik holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer

Engineering and the Advisory Board for the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership. In Sik is an avid consumer of technology and

Based in Tokyo since 2004, Serkan is an independent consultant and advisor focusing on Japan’s mobile and web industries. His
clients include financial institutions, startups, and large technology companies in the US, Japan and other parts of Asia. Serkan

Bin Lin co-founded Xiaomi Corporation with famous angel investor Lei Jun in April 2010. He is now President of Xiaomi Corporation
and is in charge of Xiaomi’s day-to-day operation, business and product strategy, and supply chain management. Bin Lin worked
at Google Inc as Engineering Director from 2006 to 2010. He founded and led the product development and engineering effort for
Mobile, Android apps, and Music at Google China office. Bin and his team successfully launched many Google products including
many versions of Google Mobile Maps (GMM) on Symbian/J2ME/iPhone/Android, Mandarin voice search, mobile verticals such as
video, dictionary, finance, local, etc., Android Pinyin IME, Android Dictionary, Android News and Weather widget, Google Music (free
streaming and download of legal music online), Google Pinyin IME, and various oneboxes. Under Bin’s leadership, Google’s mobile

Google, Bin worked at Microsoft from 1995 to 2006 and held various senior positions. In 2003 he served as Development Director of

China), and Tongji University (Shanghai, China). Bin received MS in Computer Science from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA in
1992, and BS in Electronics and Information System from Zhongshan (Sun Yet-Sen) University, Guangzhou, China in 1990.
Dr. Injong RheeheadstheTechnologyStrategy divisionas wellas the Enterprise R&D divisionof MobileCommunication at Samsung
Electronics. His responsibilities encompass business development, strategic alliances, R&D strategy and development of B2B
solutions. Dr. Rhee is currently on leave from North Carolina State University where he is a tenured full professor of Computer
Science. He has published over 100 refereed journal and conference papers, primarily on network systems and protocols for the
Internet. He is the celebrated inventor of the BIC, CUBIC TCP congestion control algorithms. Since 2004, these algorithms have
been the default TCP congestion control algorithm in the Linux kernel and are currently deployed in all Android devices, and Linux
servers and PCs around the world. Several of Dr. Rhee’s multimedia streaming and multicast technologies have also been licensed
to industry. In 2000, he founded a company to bring VoIP based Push-to-talk technologies to mobile devices. Dr. Rhee received his
Ph.D from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1994.

NEXT CONFERENCE ON INNOVATION & THE FUTURE▶ 010 / 011 Ray Ozzie is an independent software entrepreneur and pioneer in social productivity, an area more known in the field as Computer- Supported Cooperative Work. He recently founded and serves as CEO of Talko, a startup focused on a new generation of mobile communications apps and services. Through late 2010 he was Chief Software Architect of Microsoft, the company’s most senior technical strategy & architecture role previously held by Bill Gates. Ozzie came to Microsoft in 2005 through the acquisition of Groove Networks, a company he founded in 1997 to focus on software and services for small-team dynamic collaboration. Prior to Groove, in 1984 Ozzie founded and led Iris Associates, the creator and developer of Lotus Notes. A decade later, Iris was acquired by Lotus and then by IBM. Under his leadership during that period, Lotus Notes grew to be used for communication & social productivity by hundreds of millions at most major enterprises worldwide. Before creating Notes, he worked on 1-2-3 and Symphony at Lotus, on VisiCalc and TK!Solver at Software Arts, and on operating systems at Data General. Ozzie studied computer science & engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he has been honored as a distinguished alumnus. It was there where he first took in the significance of online community and social interactive systems as a systems developer on the seminal PLATO project. Honored as one of seven Windows Pioneers by Microsoft, Ozzie was named Person of the Year by PC Magazine, and has been inducted into the Computer Museum Industry Hall of Fame. He has been honored as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer and has received numerous awards including the IEEE Computer Society’s W. Wallace McDowell Award and the SDForum Visionary Award. In 2004 Ozzie was inducted as a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and in 2010 he was named as a fellow of theAmericanAcademyofArts&Sciences.HecurrentlyservesontheboardofdirectorsoftheElectronicPrivacyInformationCenter (EPIC), has served as a member of the National Research Council’s Computer Science and Telecommunications Board, and was a member of the NRC committee that produced the landmark CRISIS report on the societal impact of cryptography. Contributing Editor Spencer Reiss joined Wired in San Francisco in 1996. A former a Newsweek correspondent in Asia, Africa, the Mid East and Latin America, he focuses on the global impact of innovation, ranging from telecommunications and new media to energy and the environment. His numerous Wired bylines include cover stories on Bill Joy, Rupert Murdoch, and Richard Branson, along with “Why $5 Gas is Good for America.” In his spare time Spencer directs IGNITION, Business Insider’s annual conference on the future of digital media. He also reviews books about technology and business for The Wall Street Journal. A graduate of Dartmouth College and Columbia University, he lives in Lakeville, Connecticut. RAY OZZIE Founder & CEO of Talko Spencer Reiss (Moderator) Contributing Editor at WIRED Pat was previously a PM in Microsoft FUSE Labs, responsible for incubating new concepts and bringing them to market. In this role, he led development of Docs.com. Launched by Mark Zuckerberg at F8 in 2010, Docs.com was a collaboration between Microsoft and Facebook to bring Microsoft Office Online to the Facebook audience. Before Docs.com, Pat built several social applications within Microsoft Startup Labs and helped to bring Bing Social Search to market in October 2009. Tomer is the CEO and co-founder of Quixey, The Search Engine for Apps. Quixey provides app search technology to the world’s largest carriers, manufacturers, search engines and browsers. Tomer also sits on the board of the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and is an advisor to Innovation Endeavors and MuckerLab SeedFund. Prior to Quixey, Tomer was the founder and CEO of Your Logo Here, a branding solutions provider for companies such as Google and Slide. A lifelong entrepreneur, he founded his first company, a custom apparel printing business, in college to pay his own tuition. He has a degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Catherine Shu is a TechCrunch writer based in Taipei. She started her career in New York City at the Wall Street Journal Online and Barron’s Online before moving to Asia. After studying Mandarin Chinese, Catherine put her language skills to the test by covering the design industry and culture in Taiwan’s capital for the Taipei Times. Her other journalism experience includes an investigative reporting internship at the Village Voice and numerous freelance writing gigs.   • 12. Bin Lin co-founded Xiaomi Corporation with famous angel investor Lei Jun in April 2010. He is now President of Xiaomi Corporation and is in charge of Xiaomi’s day-to-day operation, business and product strategy, and supply chain management. Bin Lin worked at Google Inc as Engineering Director from 2006 to 2010. He founded and led the product development and engineering effort for Mobile, Android apps, and Music at Google China office. Bin and his team successfully launched many Google products including many versions of Google Mobile Maps (GMM) on Symbian/J2ME/iPhone/Android, Mandarin voice search, mobile verticals such as video, dictionary, finance, local, etc., Android Pinyin IME, Android Dictionary, Android News and Weather widget, Google Music (free streaming and download of legal music online), Google Pinyin IME, and various oneboxes. Under Bin’s leadership, Google’s mobile searchtrafficinChinagrewfrom200kto26M(SRPV)in3years,andGMMusagegrewfrom0to13M(MAU)in3years,Priortojoining Google, Bin worked at Microsoft from 1995 to 2006 and held various senior positions. In 2003 he served as Development Director of Microsoft and co-founded Microsoft’s Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in Beijing. He helped grew the center to over 400 people in 3 years. From 2000 to 2003 Bin was Senior Development Manager at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) and was in charge of MSRA’s technology transfer effort. From 1995 to 2000 Bin was Software Design Engineer and Development Lead at Microsoft Redmond headquarter. Throughout the entire 11-years of career at Microsoft, Bin made significant contribution to many Microsoft products including Exchange, Windows, IE, Office, Tablet PC, MSN, Xbox, etc. He received Microsoft’s GoldStar Award in 2004. Bin is also Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China), Zhongshan University (Guangzhou, China), Nankai University (Tianjin, China), and Tongji University (Shanghai, China). Bin received MS in Computer Science from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA in 1992, and BS in Electronics and Information System from Zhongshan (Sun Yet-Sen) University, Guangzhou, China in 1990. Dr. Injong RheeheadstheTechnologyStrategy divisionas wellas the Enterprise R&D divisionof MobileCommunication at Samsung Electronics. His responsibilities encompass business development, strategic alliances, R&D strategy and development of B2B solutions. Dr. Rhee is currently on leave from North Carolina State University where he is a tenured full professor of Computer Science. He has published over 100 refereed journal and conference papers, primarily on network systems and protocols for the Internet. He is the celebrated inventor of the BIC, CUBIC TCP congestion control algorithms. Since 2004, these algorithms have been the default TCP congestion control algorithm in the Linux kernel and are currently deployed in all Android devices, and Linux servers and PCs around the world. Several of Dr. Rhee’s multimedia streaming and multicast technologies have also been licensed to industry. In 2000, he founded a company to bring VoIP based Push-to-talk technologies to mobile devices. Dr. Rhee received his Ph.D from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1994. Jon Russell is the Asia Editor of The Next Web. He has been writing about the Internet, technology and startups in Asia since swapping London for Bangkok in 2008. Ivo heads up the design team for Ubuntu, the most popular open-source operating system. This year Ubuntu for phones and tablets were announced, which was received with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement world-wide because of its progressive design and its unique four screen strategy (phone, tablet, PC and TV). Ubuntu is already used by millions of people in over 240 countries in more than 80 languages. Beside many consumers, other great examples are thousands of schools in Spain, the French police force, and rural communities in India. Ivo has 15 years of experience in creating high-quality mobile, web, and product designs. He has worked in the telecom, social media, banking, travel, entertainment, medical and car industries. He loves creating outstanding, engaging and usable products with world-class design teams. His design work has received several awards and is published in the book Mobile Design Patterns.
