 Chat is a tool that allows for
synchronous, i.e. real-
time, communication over the internet.
 Chat has enormous potential to link
students around the world, in real time.
 Chat can link up classes and groups in
different locations, as part of
collaborative project work.
1. Text chat
Communication between chat users takes
place via typed text.
2. Audio or voice chat
Communication between chat users takes
place via audio, much like a phone
conversation, but is conducted on the
internet.
3. Public chat
There are innumerable public chat rooms on
the internet, on a huge variety of
topics, which any user can join.
4. Private chat (instant messaging)
This requires the installation of a client
program, which connects individual users
over the internet. Private chat offer the
combination of text chat, voice chat, and

Here, there is no topic or agenda set for the chat, and no
specific moderator role.
 Collaborative, task-oriented chats
With this, learners meet via chat out of class to complete a
real task.
 Informative or academic chats
This kind of chat disseminates information.
 Practice chat
These chats will practice a specific function or form of
language, or a specific skill or strategy, and will probably
take place out of the class time.
 Skype ( www.skype.com)
Skype is a free software or chat program that allows you to make video calls for free
call when we are conducted on internet .By using skype you can call, chat, video
call, or transfer files to other Skype users all over the world.
 Netmeeting (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/netmeeting/)
Netmeeting is an application program that usually comes fromWindows, usually on
Windows XP. Function of the application program,that is as a communication media
between PC, as a media of data transmission or sharing of data and as a means of
controlling.

voice chat with
learners improve
their English?
Text chat can often appear disjointed:
conversation threads get lost or
questions are ignored; there are
overlapping turns; and conventions for
taking the floor are not automatically
clear.
Voice chat is more likely to make
learners produce more fluent language.
Text chat
• Use ? to ask for the floor.
• Use ‘….’ at the end of your
sentence to show that you
have not finished a
contribution.
• Use ‘.’ at the end of your
sentence to show that you
have finished a contribution.
• Use square brackets [ ] to
make an aside to another
participant, or an off-topic
remark.
• Explain abbreviations the first
time you use them in a
chat, e.g. btw = by the way.
Voice chat
• Use a convention to ask for
the floor – this could be via
text, or a special phrase such
as Turn Please.
• Use a special phrase or word
such as Over or Done when
you have finished speaking.
• One participant should be
responsible for taking notes
during the chat.
• The moderator can nominate
quieter participants by name
to contribute.

Current chat software is very easy to install and use, so no special
technical skills are needed by either teachers and learners .

variety by using a new tool and also opening up the possibility of contacting
and communicating with classes in other parts of the world.
c) To connect learners at a distance , from primary students to adults.

text or voice lesson
Sample Text Chat Lesson Plan
 Before the class
Cooperation between two or more teachers to make
lesson plan for their class is needed in order to
make their learners meet via class project.
 Classroom management issues
The limited facilities especially the computer in the
class that fewer than learners.
 During the chat
The learners complete a worksheet that content
some information or notes of their chat partner.
 After the chat
Learners change the information to be a profile with
digital photo.
Conclusion
Considered how chat can be used both in and outside the classroom.

  • 3.  Chat is a tool that allows for synchronous, i.e. real- time, communication over the internet.  Chat has enormous potential to link students around the world, in real time.  Chat can link up classes and groups in different locations, as part of collaborative project work.
  • 4. 1. Text chat Communication between chat users takes place via typed text. 2. Audio or voice chat Communication between chat users takes place via audio, much like a phone conversation, but is conducted on the internet. 3. Public chat There are innumerable public chat rooms on the internet, on a huge variety of topics, which any user can join. 4. Private chat (instant messaging) This requires the installation of a client program, which connects individual users over the internet. Private chat offer the combination of text chat, voice chat, and
  • 6.  Free topics chat Here, there is no topic or agenda set for the chat, and no specific moderator role.  Collaborative, task-oriented chats With this, learners meet via chat out of class to complete a real task.  Informative or academic chats This kind of chat disseminates information.  Practice chat These chats will practice a specific function or form of language, or a specific skill or strategy, and will probably take place out of the class time.

Text chat can often appear disjointed: conversation threads get lost or questions are ignored; there are overlapping turns; and conventions for taking the floor are not automatically clear. Voice chat is more likely to make learners produce more fluent language.

Text chat • Use ? to ask for the floor. • Use ‘….’ at the end of your sentence to show that you have not finished a contribution. • Use ‘.’ at the end of your sentence to show that you have finished a contribution. • Use square brackets [ ] to make an aside to another participant, or an off-topic remark. • Explain abbreviations the first time you use them in a chat, e.g. btw = by the way. Voice chat • Use a convention to ask for the floor – this could be via text, or a special phrase such as Turn Please. • Use a special phrase or word such as Over or Done when you have finished speaking. • One participant should be responsible for taking notes during the chat. • The moderator can nominate quieter participants by name to contribute. What kind of English should learners use in chat?
  • 11. What technical skills do teachers and learners need to be able to use chat? Current chat software is very easy to install and use, so no special technical skills are needed by either teachers and learners .
