Founded in 1883, Modesto High School was the first public secondary school in the city
of Modesto, a community currently home to over 200,000 people. Located in the fertile
San Joaquin Valley of north central California, much of Modesto’s economy revolved
around agriculture. With the San Francisco Bay area some 90 miles to the west, many
commuters from various career areas have recently established residence in Modesto
contributing to a 50% increase in population since 1980 and causing a greater
diversification of socioeconomic levels. Modesto offers many of the cultural
opportunities and urban recourse of a metropolitan city, but many residents feel that it
still maintains an atmosphere of small town charm and hospitality.

3. Grading System and Scheduling
Modesto High operates on a seven period traditional schedule (49 minutes) each day,
with two overlapping lunch periods. Students may opt for a zero or an eighth period
class from limited offerings including computer lit, jazz band, marching band, advanced
P.E., or leadership classes. The grading system for all classes is based on a five-step
scale: A-Outstanding, B-Above Average, C-Average, D-Below Average, F-Failing. Grades
are determined by student achievement relative to the objectives of the designated
instructional level and the teacher.
Class Rank
Senior unweighted class rank is determined by the cumulative unweighted GPA that is
based on grades 9-11, and all classes including P.E. Weighted class rank is determined
by the weighted GPA that is based on grades 9-11, and all classes including P.E., with
an extra point for honors and IB/AP courses in which the student earned grades of A, B,
or C. CAL Grant GPA on the transcript refers to the college GPA for grades 10 and 11.
