April, 2013 AD will go down in history as the month of Seminars. After selecting topics in the month of March (on a first-come, first-served basis), students were bestowed with the responsibility of finding IEEE papers on the chosen topic. The general tendency was to choose a topic based on the guide. For some, it was no big deal. However, for those who had to choose only from the left-over scraps, scavenging the Internet for good material proved to be a real daunting task. Initially, a neat schedule was laid out, consisting of two phases. Somehow, these two phases were merged into one, which meant that we would have to present our seminar only once. Whether this was done for the benefit of the teachers or the students is a matter of utmost speculation. Fast forwarding to the day on which we presented our work to a panel of judges, comprising members of faculty, some of whom were least bothered about what we had to say. At times, questions were asked just for the heck of it. Don’t even get me started about our reports. I won’t speak anymore about this topic, since I think the following slideshow (made by Super Mario) does a pretty good job of explaining what I had in mind.

Late advances in neuroscience are piling up evidence supporting the idea that the understanding of emotion-related language is based on an embodied knowledge which makes it possible to recognize described events. Accordingly, investigations on emotion-related words in medieval arthurian novels should provide meaningful clues on the role of corresponding affective states in narrative descriptions and their expected appreciation among readers and audiences. The present study, which focuses on words ire and peor in Chevalier de la Charrette, is based on evidence supporting the idea that Chrétien de Troyes tends to cluster emotion words and locutions in consistent textual segments which describe emotionally-relevant circumstances and events. Evident co-occurrence makes it possible to identify and describe an emergent emotional system which underlies the thematic plan of the novel. In details, it will be shown that affective states defining the emotional system of medieval arthurian verse novels: 1) affect specific characters; 2) entail frequent reference to somatic correlates; 3) typically relate to descriptions of perceptual events; 4) underlay decision-making processes leading to purposeful intentional actions. Provided evidence supports the idea that the perspectivism of the medieval novel, which certainly affects character-specific perceptual point of view on narrated events, also applies to emotionally-relevant descriptions. Indeed, descriptions of emotional states differ on the basis of gender, age, rank and are consistent with the role the affected characters play in social context.

Travel guides, both printed or performed by professionals, provide these poor guys with the very much-needed informations which fulfill their curiosity, modulating their sensory experience of the landscape. The same happens every day on plenty of other archeological sites around the world. A traveler who reads a novel whose story takes place in the location which he or she is visiting experiences something very similar, even though the novelistic references to places rarely convey actual historical facts. Literary presences drawn from books somewhat infest cities and towns, forests and deserts, islands and hills, mountains and shores, enriching the individual sensory experience of natural or urban landscapes for people who actually read novels. For instance, American travelers reading Dan Brown’s Da Vinci code and Angels and demons while staying respectively in Paris and Roma intake some narrative references which clearly complement and enrich their experience of these European Capitals. Literary travels even emerged as a peculiar form of tourism, well exemplified by trips such as the ‘Alice Munro Literary Tour’ and ‘Italy Tour - To Hell and Back with Dante’, not to mention a ‘King Arthur England Tour’ featured by the very popular «Literary Travels» website. Among the activities related to the IV centenario de don Quijote the government of the Mancha drew la “Ruta de don Quijote”, the largest european literary itinerary, openly defined as a «corredor ecoturístico». Such travels are based on the evocative power of the literary reference, which definitely enriches the experience of places (Pocock 1987, Herbert 2001). Some places actually acquire a peculiar and significant meaning only because they are the locations where some events retold in literary masterpieces take place. Roncesvals is essentially undistinguishable from any other forest in the word, but the fact that Roland blew his horn and died somewhere around there adds something unique to the experience of the place. Balbec is a place name invented by Marcel Proust, likely to refer to an actual location, the village named Cabourg in Normandie, where a young cyclist with pale complexion rides as a literary ghost, for those who take the pleasure of reading the Recherche, eventually traveling around Normandy.
