Platform, Good is reporting on enterprise mobile application adoption in addition to device activations. We will continue to
track this growing market trend in future reports.
Executive Summary
In this Q2/Q3 report, iOS and Android continue to battle for enterprise market share; however, the more compelling story
now emerging is about the mobile applications that enterprises are developing and deploying. It’s in early stages, but we
are seeing tremendous momentum and are pleased to share this quarter’s results with you.
The conversation around mobile in the enterprise is no longer focused just on the types of devices employees are
bringing into the workplace. In a joint recent survey by TechTarget and ZK Research detailing the purchase trends of IT
professionals, 65 percent of respondents have a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy in place and another 23 percent
are in the midst of developing one. It’s clear that the emphasis is shifting to the next step in mobility: the power of
mobile applications and the transformational capabilities that are now possible with secure, app-to-app workflows that are
redefining how we work, engage with customers and build new business opportunities.
As the pervasiveness of mobile within the enterprise continues, Good customers are realizing that the true benefits are
not seen in just equipping employees with devices, but in leveraging those devices to enable secure end-to-end mobile
workflows.
Here are some of the overall highlights from this Q2/Q3 report:
Total device activations for the quarter rose nearly 60 percent from the same time last year. This quarter, we saw significant
increase in activations from Q3 2012, indicating that the rise of mobility continues to grow at a staggering pace, and
enterprises are choosing Good to protect their data, not just their devices.
There are over 1000 custom apps – those developed internally by an enterprise to automate workflows and business
process – built and deployed by Good Technology customers. This category of apps is growing the fastest, at a blistering
rate of 52 percent quarter over quarter.
Total secure mobile app activations rose nearly 42 percent quarter over quarter. Compelling to note is the rate of growth for
secure mobile apps is far greater than the growth rate of mobile device deployments, indicating that enterprises are looking
to leverage the investments they’ve already made in mobile to maximize utilization.
While Android is gaining enterprise market share on the device side, iOS dominates as platform of choice for enterprise app
deployment, with 98 percent and 95 percent of total app activations in Q2 and Q3 respectively.
Document editing comes out on top as the largest single commercial app category securing 56 percent of the activations.
Not surprisingly, this category remains the clear leader as business is largely run on documents, whether Microsoft
Powerpoint, Excel,Word, or PDF. This category continues to experience strong growth, notably 45 percent over Q2.
File access and syncing are a strong second with almost 20 percent of all activations. In the TechTarget survey noted above,
25 percent of those surveyed reported having deployed a file sync applications to their end users.

OS Highlights:
While iOS dominates as platform of choice for enterprise app deployment, Android app enterprise app deployment is
experiencing a much more significant growth rate. The number of total Android app activations nearly tripled from Q2 to
Q3, hinting at the enterprise becoming more comfortable with Android as a viable and secure platform.
At 72 percent of total device activations in Q3, iOS recovered from a slight dip in activations in Q2 at 69 percent. The
slight decrease may be due to consumers holding off on iPhone device purchases in anticipation of new models, so it will
be compelling to see what Q4 2013 brings now that new models have come to market.
Android finished at 30 percent and 27 percent of device activations for Q2 and Q3, respectively. This continues to be
elevated compared to 25 percent in Q1, and the spike in Q2 appears attributable to a major launch of new Android devices
by Samsung in that quarter.
Windows Phone activations made up one percent of total device activations in both quarters. This is an increase in total
activations seen in the previous two quarters, and equal to the percentage of total activations seen in Q2 of 2012.
Device Type Highlights:
Despite a slight decline in total number of device activations, tablets are more popular for mobile app usage with 81
percent of apps activated this quarter on this form factor. iOS continues to dominate in this area, reporting 90 percent of
the total tablet activations in Q3.
Smartphones edge out tablets for instant messaging. In a reversal, smart phones have a slight advantage coming in at just
51 percent of activations for instant messaging.
Top three tablet apps activated. Of the apps activated on tablets, 91 percent were document editing apps, followed by file
access and custom applications.
Top three smartphone apps activated. Consistent with our overall quarterly findings, custom-developed apps were the most
popular app activations on smartphones, with document editing and mobile unified communications-based apps coming in
second and third.
Android smartphones have seen the greatest increase in total activations at 27 percent in Q3, up from 21 percent in Q1
2013.
Industry Highlights:
Professional Services recorded the highest percentage increase in share of device activations, jumping 9 percent from
Q2 to Q3. This is not surprising for organizations that ‘do mobility for a living.’ Financial services, healthcare and legal
rounded out the other sectors that experienced a bump quarter over quarter.
Manufacturing had tremendous growth quarter over quarter with 32 percent increase in share of iPad activations.

Detailed Findings
Good Technology analyzed both the mobile apps and devices activated by its customers over the second and third quarter
of 2013 to highlight trends in mobility, app and device preference.
Net Activations by Platform – Q2 and Q3
Android activations came in at 30 percent and 27 percent of total activations, respectively, for Q2 and Q3 2013. The
slight dip in activations in Q3 was mirrored by an increase in iOS activations, which came in at 69 percent and 72 percent
respectively, which can likely be attributed to the release of two new iPhone devices in Q3. Even at 72 percent in Q3, there
continues to be a decrease in total iOS activations quarter over quarter (almost three percentage points). Windows Phone
activations made up one percent of total activations each quarter, up slightly from total activations seen in the previous two
quarters.
