1. The Challenges and Rewards of Family Midwives
A midwife has one of the most potentially rewarding and satisfying careers around with many of
them feeling truly proud and privileged to be involved in such a precious time for so many families.
The life of a midwife however, is not for the faint hearted.
Family Midwives are busy people but they generally thrive on it. There is no “nine to five” routine for
them, babies are rarely quite so co-operative and women go into labour at all hours of the night and
day. It takes a lot of hard work to become a midwife and once you achieve your dream then there is
lots more hard work to look forward to.
Midwives become involved with the pre-natal care of a patient very early on in the pregnancy,
evaluating the individual needs of each patient, developing care plans and generally keeping a crucial
eye on how the mother and her unborn child are progressing.
For the majority
of people going
through a
pregnancy and
birth is a joyous
experience but
unfortunately it
is not always the
case. Some
women may lose
their babies
through
miscarriage;
others may have
to make
incredibly
difficult decisions if the unborn child has been diagnosed as having neonatal abnormalities. The
midwife is the person who is turned to for support and care during the most difficult and
heartbreaking of situations.
Midwives are also present during labour and the birth. Some deliveries themselves can have
complications. The midwife is responsible for monitoring each birth and ensuring that the necessary
health care professionals are available as needed. This can be an extremely trying time for any
mother so it is important that they have a good relationship with the midwife who can provide
comfort and information about what is happening and what will happen in any process.
Of course, midwives also get to experience the most rewarding thing in the world – the birth of a
bouncing, healthy baby girl or boy. Some women can be in labour for many hours, but if you are
lucky enough to have family midwives they will stay with you every step of the way. Witnessing the
birth of a newborn child and a couple welcoming that child into their family is one of the most
2. rewarding experiences in the world. Why do midwives work so hard at such unsociable hours?
Because there is nothing else they would rather do.
