Introduction

Requirements
We recommend that you read this manual prior to installation and when reviewing the
functions provided in WordFinder.
A good understanding of Mac OS X is required to fully understand the contents of this
manual.


Technical specifications
WordFinder 9 Professional for Mac requires:

      Processor: PowerPC or Intel.
      Mac OS X 10.3 or later.
      A CD-ROM drive.
      Hard disk space alternates between different dictionaries.
Installation

Installation of WordFinder for Mac with dictionary
   1. Make sure that older WordFinder versions are closed before installation of the new
      program version. Insert the WordFinder CD in the CD drive.
   2. An icon representing the CD appears on your desktop. Doubleclick on the icon to
      open the CD.
   3. Doubleclick Install to start the installation process.
   4. Enter company details and name in the Registration Card window.
   5. Enter the key codes for your software and purchased dictionaries. These are printed on
      the license certificate provide with the program and dictionaries.

These license keys are printed on the license certificate provided with the program and
dictionaries. Please note that there is one license certificate for the software and one
certificate for each purchased dictionary. To now install all the dictionaries available on the
CD, you will have to enter the license key for each dictionary that is shown on each license
certificate in the fields shown here.
NOTE!
A license key consists of an alphabetic combination of 8 characters. This is a unique
combination and is only valid in combination with the CD Serial Number. Each CD has its
own individual serial number. Check to make sure that the number stated by the CD Serial
Number is the same as the number on the license certificate. If you own license certificates
for other CD’s, install these later on from each individual CD.

   6. Click Next when the correct key codes have been entered.
   7. A dialog window opens to display which components you have entered key codes for.
      Uncheck any component that you do not wish to install.
   8. Click Install to start the installation.
   9. A list of components to be installed is now shown in a new dialog window.
  10. When all components have been installed, you can either close the installer or carry
      out further installations.
  11. You will be notified of a computer restart, if this is required to fully install a certain
      component.
Move dictionaries
You can move WordFinder and/or your dictionaries to another folder of your choice.
NOTE!
The quick start key will only work with WordFinder in the Program folder, which is the
folder the software was installed.
Any dictionaries that have been moved have to be opened again in WordFinder. This is done
by selecting Open dictionary in the File menu in WordFinder. Refer to Dictionaries.
How to use WordFinder for Mac

Start WordFinder
When WordFinder is installed, it can be found on your hard disk in the Program folder.
Doubleclick on the WordFinder file to start the software.
If you use WordFinder on a regular basis, you can make the program easier to access by
dragging the software icon to dock.
You can also run WordFinder using the hotkey ctrl+W. If you start WordFinder using a
hotkey, any selected text will be automatically searched for in WordFinder. Go to Settings,
if you wish to reset the hotkey.


Closing WordFinder
Close WordFinder as follows:

      1. Select Exit from the WordFinder menu.

or:

      1. Press ⌘+Q.


Window Manager
The following image represents the main WordFinder software interface. The content in the
following two chapters refers to this image.
Modify WordFinder window size

      The software window can be altered by dragging the drag region at the bottom right
      hand corner.

or:

      Change software window size by clicking the zoom box located second from the right
      in the upper list.

Other window features

      Search words are typed in the box on the top left.
      In the search list on the left, entries from the dictionaries you have selected are
      displayed. If you have searched for a particular headword, this word will be
      highlighted.
      The entry window on the right displays translations, explanations etc for any
      headwords selected in the search list. You can choose to view one, two or three
      entries at a time (Refer to Settings).
      One of the three search option buttons is always pressed in, usually the left button.
      This option lets you search in the list of headwords. The middle button allows you to
      search in the upper entry. The right-hand button carries out a search in all entries
      from the dictionaries you have selected.
Language direction can be changed by clicking on the flag icon on the top right.


WordFinder menus, toolbars and functions
The WordFinder menu contains, among other options, commands for settings and for
closing WordFinder.
The File menu contains dictionary options such as opening, closing, import and export.
The Edit menu contains standard editing commands, as well as a user note feature.
The Language menu lists languages in which searches can be carried out.
The Dictionaries menu lists the dictionaries that are indexed when searching. The
dictionaries accessible when searching are defined by the languages used to carry out a
search.

WordFinder menu language
The language interface used in WordFinder’s menus and windows is the one defined on top
of the list under System settings—International—Language.
Search in WordFinder
There are a number of search options available when translating content. Select a search
option that suits your method of working.

Direct search from other applications
Search for the word directly from the application you are using. Note that this feature is not
supported by all programs.

   1. Select the word you wish to search for.
   2. Activate WordFinder using the ctrl+W hotkey.

WordFinder searches automatically through the headword index to finally display
explanations, translations, synonyms etc in the entry window.

   3. Doubleclick on the word/phrase you want to paste. This step will return you to the
      original program and the selected text is replaced by the word/phrase you
      doubleclicked on.

Searching in WordFinder

   1. Activate WordFinder and enter the word you wish to search for in the Search field.

WordFinder searches for the word to finally display explanations, translations, synonyms etc
in the entry window.

   2. Click on the word/phrase you want to paste. The translation is then stored in
      Clipboard. Go to your program and paste in the translation.

Searching on every key press
When you type in a word in the Search field, WordFinder searches incrementally after each
key press. The search list on the left changes in line with each new letter that is typed in.
When WordFinder retrieves a hit, the translation is displayed in the entry window on the
right. WordFinder continues to search if you continue to type in other letters.

Searching more than one word at a time
You can search for more than one word at a time using WordFinder. This may be of benefit
for instance when the word you are interested in may be indexed in different headwords. (for
example ball, which can be used in a game or can be used to describe a dance event). It may
also be useful if you are unsure of the best word or phrase to use in a certain context
(subscription, subscription fee, subscriber, subscribe…)

   1. Click on the word in the list shown and keep the mouse button pressed.
   2. Drag the cursor over the word you want to select.
   3. Release the mouse button.
Searching cross-references
A cross-reference is shown in italics in the entry window. You can look up a cross-reference
in the same way as you do all other words in the entry, as follows:

Searching for words in an entry
Used to translate words in the entry window.

   1. Press down the ⌘ key on the keyboard.
   2. Click on the word you want to translate.

Searching in an entry
There are three buttons to the right of the search word. The left one is normally pressed in,
which means that a search occurs in the headword list. If instead you would like to search in
an entry or all entries, click on the middle button or on the button on the right.




Clicking on the middle button lets you search in the top entry in the list. If you continue
clicking on the button, the program continues to search in the same entry.
If you click on the right-hand button, the software searches in all entries in all selected
dictionaries. This search option may take time depending on how many and how large the
dictionaries are. A complete search shows a list of all the headwords for those entries
containing the word or phrase in question.

Search in opposite language direction
There is, at times, a requirement to carry out a search in a corresponding language in a
bilingual dictionary in an attempt to define various intonations in a language.

   1. Enter the word you wish to search for in the Search field.

WordFinder searches for the word to finally display explanations, translations, synonyms etc
in the entry window. You can easily translate any word in the hitlist found in the
corresponding dictionary.

   2. Click on the word while at the same time pressing ⌘+alt.
   3. The translation of the word is now shown in the entry window in the corresponding
      dictionary.

Wildcard searching
You can either enter the exact word to be searched for or use either * or ? to represent a
wildcard character. The * character represents one or more real characters. The ? character
represents any one character.
This is a very practical function when you are unsure of how a certain word is spelt, when
you require help with synonyms for language variety or when you are solving crosswords.
Example:
The search words, far?yard , fa*yard or far*ya?? will all result in farmyard.
The search word *yard may lead to a yard, courtyard, farmyard, etc and is dependent on
which dictionary the search is carried out in.
NOTE!
This option can only be used when you search among headwords and not when you search
in one or more entries. If you include a wild card character in a search word and then carry
out an entry search, the program will actually search for this wildcard character.

Unsuccessful search
The following may be reasons why WordFinder cannot look up a certain word:

      The translation takes place in the wrong direction in the software. Solution: Press
      ⌘+R to alter language direction. Language direction can also be changed in the
      Language menu.
      Wrong language or dictionary selected. Solution: Change language and/or dictionary.
      The word is not indexed in the dictionary. Check to see if the word is a conjugation
      of another word, for example good – better – best, or if it is a headword that consists
      of different components.
Preferences
Go to WordFinder | Preferences to set the hotkey combination for Quick start and define
how many entries you wish to display to the right in the entry window.


Setting the Quick start key
Do as follows to set the hotkey combination to quick start the program:

   1. Select WordFinder | Preferences.
   2. Select the Hotkey tab.
   3. Enter the key combination that you wish to set as a hotkey to quick start the program.

If the key combination you choose is not accepted, it is being used by another application.
Reset the combination and redo step 3.

   4. Close the setting's dialog window.


Setting number of entries displayed
Do as follows to define how many entries are displayed in the entry window:

   1. Select WordFinder | Preferences.
   2. Select the Entries tab.
   3. Select the number of entries to show in the entry window using the popup menu.
   4. Close the setting's dialog window.

If you choose to display more than one entry at a time, the entry/entries for a headword
highlighted in the headword window will be listed on top. Then the entry history is
displayed, i.e. the details that were shown in the entry window previously.


Language
Select language
Set search language using the Language menu.
You can also select language using hotkey commands. Refer to How to use keyboard with
WordFinder.

Change language direction
Go to the Language menu to change language direction in a bilingual dictionary. If the
program is set to search from Swedish to English, and language direction is changed, then
the software will search from English to Swedish.
You can also change language direction by clicking on the flag icon in the main program
window.
Dictionaries
When you have set a language, you can then select the dictionaries you want to work with in
the Dictionaries menu. Click on the dictionary/dictionaries you wish to use. You can use
more than one dictionary at a time. Dictionaries in use are ticked to the left in the menu.
When you then carry out a search for a word or phrase, WordFinder searches for the word or
phrase in the dictionaries that are selected. The resulting search list contains the word you
searched for. The word is displayed as often as it appears in the selected dictionaries. An
explanation for each occurrence of the word is displayed in the entry window, if you scroll
down the list of hits. The dictionary from which the entry is retrieved can be seen within the
square brackets to the right of the headword in the entry window.
If you cannot find the dictionary you require, it may not be installed/activated or it may
belong to another language.


Open a dictionary
Dictionaries are opened automatically when WordFinder is installed.
If you close a dictionary by mistake, it has to be opened again manually. Do as follows:

   1. Select File—Open dictionary. You can also use ⌘+O.
   2. In the dialog window that opens, browse to the dictionary you wish to open and click
      on it to select it.
   3. Continue by clicking Open.


Close a dictionary
Dictionaries no longer in use can be closed at any time. You can always re-open a dictionary
later.

   1. Select File—Show dictionaries.

A list of connected dictionaries is displayed in a dialog window.

   2. Browse to the dictionary you want to close and click to select it.
   3. Click Close.


Inactive dictionaries
When dictionaries in the Dictionaries menu are greyed out, it may depend on the fact that
WordFinder is no longer linked to these dictionaries that it opened previously. This may be
caused by removal of the dictionaries from the hard disk or they may be copied to another
disk that was removed at a later stage, etc. These dictionaries cannot be selected.
This can be remedied as follows:

      Remove link with the dictionary by selecting File—Close dictionary. Refer to above.
      Open the dictionary again by selecting File—Open dictionary. Refer to above.


User dictionaries
Users can create their own dictionaries in WordFinder for Mac. A user dictionary can, for
instance, be an additional index to an existing, purchased dictionary, adding new words and
explanations. Another example can be an industrial list with technical terms that are used in
house by your company.
Note that it is easier to use the Notes function when adding but a few terms to a purchased
dictionary instead of creating an entirely new dictionary. Refer to Notes.
Any user dictionary can subsequently be used by other people, either by sharing the
dictionary file you have created with others or by storing it on server.

Create a new dictionary
Do as follows to create a new dictionary:

   1. Select File—New dictionary.
   2. Type in where the dictionary is to be saved and set translation language combination
      in the dialog window that opens. Enter also a title and a comment e.g. copyright
      details.




   3. Click Create when you have typed in all details.

A new dictionary is now created that does not, however, contain any headwords or entries.
Add words
Do as follows to add words to a user dictionary:

   1. Make sure that the selected language direction corresponds to the language direction
      set in the user dictionary.
   2. Select Edit—New word.
   3. Type in the word and accompanying entry you wish to add in the dialog window that
      opens. The toolbar includes a number of options to help you format the entry.




The word and accompanying entry are automatically saved when you close the dialog
window.

Edit words
Do as follows to edit words in a user dictionary:

   1. Display the word you wish to edit.
   2. Select Edit—Modify word.
   3. Edit the word in question and the accompanying entry in the dialog window that
      opens. The toolbar includes a number of options to help you format the entry.

Any changes made are saved automatically when you close the dialog window.

Import to a user dictionary
Do as follows to import:

   1. Select File—Show dictionaries.

A list of connected dictionaries is displayed in a dialog window.

   2. Browse to the dictionary you want to import headwords and entries to and click to
      select it.
   3. Click on Import.
The Import button may be greyed out for the following reasons:

      More than one dictionary is selected in the list.
      A selected dictionary has been purchased or is locked (refer to chapter on how to
      prevent access to user dictionaries.

Select your import file in the dialog window that opens when you click Import.

   4. Select import file.

NOTE!
The import file has to have the same format as referred to in Import file format below.




   5. Select whether if the imported entries are to be added to or replace existing entries.
   6. Continue by clicking Import.

The import process begins. This may take some time depending on computer capacity and
import file size.

Export to a user dictionary
Do as follows to export:

   1. Select File—Show dictionaries.

A list of connected dictionaries is displayed in a dialog window.

   2. Browse in the list to the dictionary with the entries you want to export and click to
      select it.
   3. Click Export.

The Export button may be greyed out for the following reasons:

      More than one dictionary is selected in the list.
      A selected dictionary has been purchased or is locked (refer to chapter on how to
      prevent access to user dictionaries.
Once you click Export, a new dialog window opens where you type in the file path to the
folder storing the export file, as well as a name for the file.

   4. Type in a file path and a file name.
   5. Click Save.

The export process begins. This may take some time depending on computer capacity and
dictionary file size. The export file has to have the same format as referred to in Import file
format below.

Locking user dictionaries
A locked dictionary is characterised as follows:

      It cannot be unlocked by anyone else.
      It cannot be edited.
      It cannot be exported.
      It uses less disk space as its contents are compressed.
      It can be opened by more than one user. One user can only access an unlocked user
      dictionary at a time.

Do as follows to lock a user dictionary:

   1. Select File—Show dictionaries.

A list of connected dictionaries is displayed in a dialog window.

   2. Browse in the list to the dictionary you want to lock and click to select it.
   3. Click Lock.

The locking process begins. This may take some time depending on computer capacity and
dictionary file size.
The Lock button may be greyed out for the following reasons:

      More than one dictionary is selected in the list.
      The selected dictionary has been purchased or is already locked.

A new locked dictionary is created in the same folder as the unlocked version. The unlocked
dictionary is still available unchanged. The locked dictionary has .lexicon as file suffix.
Dictionaries that are not locked have .ulex as file suffixes.


Import file format
The import file is a pure text file with the following layout:

The UTF-8 character set is used. Please refer to Text Editor below for more details.

Headwords
A headword is stored on its own line and is enclosed by the @ character.

Entries
The entry begins on new line. A line break in an entry is maintained as a hard line break in
the entry window.
Entry content in the entry is mixed with control codes that affect typography, define whether
a text is a translation, etc. All control codes (with the exception of two) begin with a !.
The two exceptions are the > and < characters, which begin and conclude a translation
segment. Refer to >multiplikationstabell< ?? in the example above. If you do not want to use
the > < characters in your text, you can use the !> and !< control codes instead. Type !! if
you want to include an exclamation mark in your content.

Text Editor
When creating and maintaining import files, we recommend using the Text Editor, an
application that is included with your OSX system, as it can manage Unicode files.
NOTE!
You cannot use Microsoft Word as it cannot manage Unicode files.

Important to remember
It is important to remember the following when working with import files:
New file:
Make sure you select the Pure text file format and not RTF. The correct format is selected
in the Format menu.
Open previously created file:
Never open a file, even if it has been created in the Text Editor or other application, by
doubleclicking on the file in Finder. This will lead to errors. Do as follows instead:

   1. Open Text Editor.
   2. Select File—Open.
   3. Select the import file you wish to open.
   4. Select Unicode (UTF-8) in the popup menu under the file list.

Note!
It is important that Unicode (UTF-8) is checked and not Automatic.

   5. Continue by clicking Open.

Save file:
It is imperative to go to File—Save as. It is important not to select File—Save. Select
Character table for pure text: Unicode (UTF-8) from the popup menu in the file list.
Continue by clicking Save.


Notes
Notes are linked to entries in your dictionaries. This function allows you to create your own
notes or include comments with an entry.

Create a new note
Do as follows:
1. Click on the headword you wish to add a note to so that it’s entry is displayed on top
      of the entry window.
   2. Select Edit—Add note.

A dialog window opens in which you type in your note.




Close the dialog when you are done.

Display, edit and delete notes
A small yellow icon is displayed in the entry window directly after the headword for any
entry that has a note.
Clicking on this icon opens a window displaying the note.
You can edit note contents directly in this window. Any changes are saved when you closed
the window.
If all text in the note is deleted and the window closed, the program will remove the note
automatically.

  • 2. Foreword The Internet has broken down many global barriers. It provides both the private and the corporate community with a whole new networking model. Language skills are now a lesser source for concern when it comes to international business and personal correspondence. WordFinder helps you and your company to effortlessly communicate in different languages. WordFinder can, in a split second, display translations, phrases and synonyms required in your work. WordFinder, complete with accompanying dictionaries, offers users much more than standard printed dictionaries. As well as saving time and the greater level of flexibility, you can avail of the following advanced functions: User dictionaries Create user dictionaries with in-house or branch specific terminology. Search in several Carry out a search in several dictionaries by dictionaries selecting the dictionaries in question. Entry search Search for a phrase or expression. Wild card search Carry out advanced searches for word segments using wild card characters (* or ?). Paste translations You can quickly and easily paste the translation into your document. Notes This option lets you create notes relating to WordFinder dictionaries. Import dictionaries Convert your old dictionaries into the WordFinder format.   • 4. Introduction Requirements We recommend that you read this manual prior to installation and when reviewing the functions provided in WordFinder. A good understanding of Mac OS X is required to fully understand the contents of this manual. Technical specifications WordFinder 9 Professional for Mac requires: Processor: PowerPC or Intel. Mac OS X 10.3 or later. A CD-ROM drive. Hard disk space alternates between different dictionaries.
  • 5. Installation Installation of WordFinder for Mac with dictionary 1. Make sure that older WordFinder versions are closed before installation of the new program version. Insert the WordFinder CD in the CD drive. 2. An icon representing the CD appears on your desktop. Doubleclick on the icon to open the CD. 3. Doubleclick Install to start the installation process. 4. Enter company details and name in the Registration Card window. 5. Enter the key codes for your software and purchased dictionaries. These are printed on the license certificate provide with the program and dictionaries. These license keys are printed on the license certificate provided with the program and dictionaries. Please note that there is one license certificate for the software and one certificate for each purchased dictionary. To now install all the dictionaries available on the CD, you will have to enter the license key for each dictionary that is shown on each license certificate in the fields shown here. NOTE! A license key consists of an alphabetic combination of 8 characters. This is a unique combination and is only valid in combination with the CD Serial Number. Each CD has its own individual serial number. Check to make sure that the number stated by the CD Serial Number is the same as the number on the license certificate. If you own license certificates for other CD’s, install these later on from each individual CD. 6. Click Next when the correct key codes have been entered. 7. A dialog window opens to display which components you have entered key codes for. Uncheck any component that you do not wish to install. 8. Click Install to start the installation. 9. A list of components to be installed is now shown in a new dialog window. 10. When all components have been installed, you can either close the installer or carry out further installations. 11. You will be notified of a computer restart, if this is required to fully install a certain component.
  • 6. Move dictionaries You can move WordFinder and/or your dictionaries to another folder of your choice. NOTE! The quick start key will only work with WordFinder in the Program folder, which is the folder the software was installed. Any dictionaries that have been moved have to be opened again in WordFinder. This is done by selecting Open dictionary in the File menu in WordFinder. Refer to Dictionaries.
  • 7. How to use WordFinder for Mac Start WordFinder When WordFinder is installed, it can be found on your hard disk in the Program folder. Doubleclick on the WordFinder file to start the software. If you use WordFinder on a regular basis, you can make the program easier to access by dragging the software icon to dock. You can also run WordFinder using the hotkey ctrl+W. If you start WordFinder using a hotkey, any selected text will be automatically searched for in WordFinder. Go to Settings, if you wish to reset the hotkey. Closing WordFinder Close WordFinder as follows: 1. Select Exit from the WordFinder menu. or: 1. Press ⌘+Q. Window Manager The following image represents the main WordFinder software interface. The content in the following two chapters refers to this image.

Modify WordFinder window size The software window can be altered by dragging the drag region at the bottom right hand corner. or: Change software window size by clicking the zoom box located second from the right in the upper list. Other window features Search words are typed in the box on the top left. In the search list on the left, entries from the dictionaries you have selected are displayed. If you have searched for a particular headword, this word will be highlighted. The entry window on the right displays translations, explanations etc for any headwords selected in the search list. You can choose to view one, two or three entries at a time (Refer to Settings). One of the three search option buttons is always pressed in, usually the left button. This option lets you search in the list of headwords. The middle button allows you to search in the upper entry. The right-hand button carries out a search in all entries from the dictionaries you have selected.
  • 9. Language direction can be changed by clicking on the flag icon on the top right. WordFinder menus, toolbars and functions The WordFinder menu contains, among other options, commands for settings and for closing WordFinder. The File menu contains dictionary options such as opening, closing, import and export. The Edit menu contains standard editing commands, as well as a user note feature. The Language menu lists languages in which searches can be carried out. The Dictionaries menu lists the dictionaries that are indexed when searching. The dictionaries accessible when searching are defined by the languages used to carry out a search. WordFinder menu language The language interface used in WordFinder’s menus and windows is the one defined on top of the list under System settings—International—Language.
  • 10. Search in WordFinder There are a number of search options available when translating content. Select a search option that suits your method of working. Direct search from other applications Search for the word directly from the application you are using. Note that this feature is not supported by all programs. 1. Select the word you wish to search for. 2. Activate WordFinder using the ctrl+W hotkey. WordFinder searches automatically through the headword index to finally display explanations, translations, synonyms etc in the entry window. 3. Doubleclick on the word/phrase you want to paste. This step will return you to the original program and the selected text is replaced by the word/phrase you doubleclicked on. Searching in WordFinder 1. Activate WordFinder and enter the word you wish to search for in the Search field. WordFinder searches for the word to finally display explanations, translations, synonyms etc in the entry window. 2. Click on the word/phrase you want to paste. The translation is then stored in Clipboard. Go to your program and paste in the translation. Searching on every key press When you type in a word in the Search field, WordFinder searches incrementally after each key press. The search list on the left changes in line with each new letter that is typed in. When WordFinder retrieves a hit, the translation is displayed in the entry window on the right. WordFinder continues to search if you continue to type in other letters. Searching more than one word at a time You can search for more than one word at a time using WordFinder. This may be of benefit for instance when the word you are interested in may be indexed in different headwords. (for example ball, which can be used in a game or can be used to describe a dance event). It may also be useful if you are unsure of the best word or phrase to use in a certain context (subscription, subscription fee, subscriber, subscribe…) 1. Click on the word in the list shown and keep the mouse button pressed. 2. Drag the cursor over the word you want to select. 3. Release the mouse button.
  • 11. Searching cross-references A cross-reference is shown in italics in the entry window. You can look up a cross-reference in the same way as you do all other words in the entry, as follows: Searching for words in an entry Used to translate words in the entry window. 1. Press down the ⌘ key on the keyboard. 2. Click on the word you want to translate. Searching in an entry There are three buttons to the right of the search word. The left one is normally pressed in, which means that a search occurs in the headword list. If instead you would like to search in an entry or all entries, click on the middle button or on the button on the right. Clicking on the middle button lets you search in the top entry in the list. If you continue clicking on the button, the program continues to search in the same entry. If you click on the right-hand button, the software searches in all entries in all selected dictionaries. This search option may take time depending on how many and how large the dictionaries are. A complete search shows a list of all the headwords for those entries containing the word or phrase in question. Search in opposite language direction There is, at times, a requirement to carry out a search in a corresponding language in a bilingual dictionary in an attempt to define various intonations in a language. 1. Enter the word you wish to search for in the Search field. WordFinder searches for the word to finally display explanations, translations, synonyms etc in the entry window. You can easily translate any word in the hitlist found in the corresponding dictionary. 2. Click on the word while at the same time pressing ⌘+alt. 3. The translation of the word is now shown in the entry window in the corresponding dictionary. Wildcard searching You can either enter the exact word to be searched for or use either * or ? to represent a
  • 12. wildcard character. The * character represents one or more real characters. The ? character represents any one character. This is a very practical function when you are unsure of how a certain word is spelt, when you require help with synonyms for language variety or when you are solving crosswords. Example: The search words, far?yard , fa*yard or far*ya?? will all result in farmyard. The search word *yard may lead to a yard, courtyard, farmyard, etc and is dependent on which dictionary the search is carried out in. NOTE! This option can only be used when you search among headwords and not when you search in one or more entries. If you include a wild card character in a search word and then carry out an entry search, the program will actually search for this wildcard character. Unsuccessful search The following may be reasons why WordFinder cannot look up a certain word: The translation takes place in the wrong direction in the software. Solution: Press ⌘+R to alter language direction. Language direction can also be changed in the Language menu. Wrong language or dictionary selected. Solution: Change language and/or dictionary. The word is not indexed in the dictionary. Check to see if the word is a conjugation of another word, for example good – better – best, or if it is a headword that consists of different components.
  • 13. Preferences Go to WordFinder | Preferences to set the hotkey combination for Quick start and define how many entries you wish to display to the right in the entry window. Setting the Quick start key Do as follows to set the hotkey combination to quick start the program: 1. Select WordFinder | Preferences. 2. Select the Hotkey tab. 3. Enter the key combination that you wish to set as a hotkey to quick start the program. If the key combination you choose is not accepted, it is being used by another application. Reset the combination and redo step 3. 4. Close the setting's dialog window. Setting number of entries displayed Do as follows to define how many entries are displayed in the entry window: 1. Select WordFinder | Preferences. 2. Select the Entries tab. 3. Select the number of entries to show in the entry window using the popup menu. 4. Close the setting's dialog window. If you choose to display more than one entry at a time, the entry/entries for a headword highlighted in the headword window will be listed on top. Then the entry history is displayed, i.e. the details that were shown in the entry window previously. Language Select language Set search language using the Language menu.
  • 14. You can also select language using hotkey commands. Refer to How to use keyboard with WordFinder. Change language direction Go to the Language menu to change language direction in a bilingual dictionary. If the program is set to search from Swedish to English, and language direction is changed, then the software will search from English to Swedish. You can also change language direction by clicking on the flag icon in the main program window.
  • 15. Dictionaries When you have set a language, you can then select the dictionaries you want to work with in the Dictionaries menu. Click on the dictionary/dictionaries you wish to use. You can use more than one dictionary at a time. Dictionaries in use are ticked to the left in the menu. When you then carry out a search for a word or phrase, WordFinder searches for the word or phrase in the dictionaries that are selected. The resulting search list contains the word you searched for. The word is displayed as often as it appears in the selected dictionaries. An explanation for each occurrence of the word is displayed in the entry window, if you scroll down the list of hits. The dictionary from which the entry is retrieved can be seen within the square brackets to the right of the headword in the entry window. If you cannot find the dictionary you require, it may not be installed/activated or it may belong to another language. Open a dictionary Dictionaries are opened automatically when WordFinder is installed. If you close a dictionary by mistake, it has to be opened again manually. Do as follows: 1. Select File—Open dictionary. You can also use ⌘+O. 2. In the dialog window that opens, browse to the dictionary you wish to open and click on it to select it. 3. Continue by clicking Open. Close a dictionary Dictionaries no longer in use can be closed at any time. You can always re-open a dictionary later. 1. Select File—Show dictionaries. A list of connected dictionaries is displayed in a dialog window. 2. Browse to the dictionary you want to close and click to select it. 3. Click Close. Inactive dictionaries When dictionaries in the Dictionaries menu are greyed out, it may depend on the fact that WordFinder is no longer linked to these dictionaries that it opened previously. This may be caused by removal of the dictionaries from the hard disk or they may be copied to another
  • 16. disk that was removed at a later stage, etc. These dictionaries cannot be selected. This can be remedied as follows: Remove link with the dictionary by selecting File—Close dictionary. Refer to above. Open the dictionary again by selecting File—Open dictionary. Refer to above. User dictionaries Users can create their own dictionaries in WordFinder for Mac. A user dictionary can, for instance, be an additional index to an existing, purchased dictionary, adding new words and explanations. Another example can be an industrial list with technical terms that are used in house by your company. Note that it is easier to use the Notes function when adding but a few terms to a purchased dictionary instead of creating an entirely new dictionary. Refer to Notes. Any user dictionary can subsequently be used by other people, either by sharing the dictionary file you have created with others or by storing it on server. Create a new dictionary Do as follows to create a new dictionary: 1. Select File—New dictionary. 2. Type in where the dictionary is to be saved and set translation language combination in the dialog window that opens. Enter also a title and a comment e.g. copyright details. 3. Click Create when you have typed in all details. A new dictionary is now created that does not, however, contain any headwords or entries.
  • 17. Add words Do as follows to add words to a user dictionary: 1. Make sure that the selected language direction corresponds to the language direction set in the user dictionary. 2. Select Edit—New word. 3. Type in the word and accompanying entry you wish to add in the dialog window that opens. The toolbar includes a number of options to help you format the entry. The word and accompanying entry are automatically saved when you close the dialog window. Edit words Do as follows to edit words in a user dictionary: 1. Display the word you wish to edit. 2. Select Edit—Modify word. 3. Edit the word in question and the accompanying entry in the dialog window that opens. The toolbar includes a number of options to help you format the entry. Any changes made are saved automatically when you close the dialog window. Import to a user dictionary Do as follows to import: 1. Select File—Show dictionaries. A list of connected dictionaries is displayed in a dialog window. 2. Browse to the dictionary you want to import headwords and entries to and click to select it. 3. Click on Import.

Select whether if the imported entries are to be added to or replace existing entries. 6. Continue by clicking Import. The import process begins. This may take some time depending on computer capacity and import file size. Export to a user dictionary Do as follows to export: 1. Select File—Show dictionaries. A list of connected dictionaries is displayed in a dialog window. 2. Browse in the list to the dictionary with the entries you want to export and click to select it. 3. Click Export. The Export button may be greyed out for the following reasons: More than one dictionary is selected in the list. A selected dictionary has been purchased or is locked (refer to chapter on how to prevent access to user dictionaries.

Locking user dictionaries A locked dictionary is characterised as follows: It cannot be unlocked by anyone else. It cannot be edited. It cannot be exported. It uses less disk space as its contents are compressed. It can be opened by more than one user. One user can only access an unlocked user dictionary at a time. Do as follows to lock a user dictionary: 1. Select File—Show dictionaries. A list of connected dictionaries is displayed in a dialog window. 2. Browse in the list to the dictionary you want to lock and click to select it. 3. Click Lock. The locking process begins. This may take some time depending on computer capacity and dictionary file size. The Lock button may be greyed out for the following reasons: More than one dictionary is selected in the list. The selected dictionary has been purchased or is already locked. A new locked dictionary is created in the same folder as the unlocked version. The unlocked dictionary is still available unchanged. The locked dictionary has .lexicon as file suffix. Dictionaries that are not locked have .ulex as file suffixes. Import file format

Headwords A headword is stored on its own line and is enclosed by the @ character. Entries The entry begins on new line. A line break in an entry is maintained as a hard line break in the entry window. Entry content in the entry is mixed with control codes that affect typography, define whether a text is a translation, etc. All control codes (with the exception of two) begin with a !. The two exceptions are the > and < characters, which begin and conclude a translation segment. Refer to >multiplikationstabell< ?? in the example above. If you do not want to use the > < characters in your text, you can use the !> and !< control codes instead. Type !! if you want to include an exclamation mark in your content.   • 22. !N15 Black text !n Return to black text Text Editor When creating and maintaining import files, we recommend using the Text Editor, an application that is included with your OSX system, as it can manage Unicode files. NOTE! You cannot use Microsoft Word as it cannot manage Unicode files. Important to remember It is important to remember the following when working with import files: New file: Make sure you select the Pure text file format and not RTF. The correct format is selected in the Format menu. Open previously created file: Never open a file, even if it has been created in the Text Editor or other application, by doubleclicking on the file in Finder. This will lead to errors. Do as follows instead: 1. Open Text Editor. 2. Select File—Open. 3. Select the import file you wish to open. 4. Select Unicode (UTF-8) in the popup menu under the file list. Note! It is important that Unicode (UTF-8) is checked and not Automatic. 5. Continue by clicking Open. Save file: It is imperative to go to File—Save as. It is important not to select File—Save. Select Character table for pure text: Unicode (UTF-8) from the popup menu in the file list. Continue by clicking Save. Notes Notes are linked to entries in your dictionaries. This function allows you to create your own notes or include comments with an entry. Create a new note Do as follows:
  • 23. 1. Click on the headword you wish to add a note to so that it’s entry is displayed on top of the entry window. 2. Select Edit—Add note. A dialog window opens in which you type in your note. Close the dialog when you are done. Display, edit and delete notes A small yellow icon is displayed in the entry window directly after the headword for any entry that has a note. Clicking on this icon opens a window displaying the note. You can edit note contents directly in this window. Any changes are saved when you closed the window. If all text in the note is deleted and the window closed, the program will remove the note automatically.
