Abstract
The following resources come from the 2009/10 BSc (Hons) in Multimedia Technology (course number
2ELE0075) from the University of Hertfordshire. All the mini projects are designed as level two modules of
the undergraduate programmes.

Project Objectives: To demonstrate abilities to:
    • Design and implement multimedia applications
    • Apply System Development Life Cycle methodology
    • Create and manipulate a range of media elements such as image, sound and animation

Section 1. Project Introduction
Project Title: Personal Multimedia Portfolio

Project Objectives: (technical, specific to this project)
To demonstrate abilities to:
    • Design and implement multimedia applications
    • Apply System Development Life Cycle methodology
    • Create and manipulate a range of media elements such as image, sound and animation

Project Summary: (50 words max)
This project requires students to apply the System Development Life Cycle methodology to design and
implement their personal multimedia portfolios for specific target audiences, with proper use of different media
elements including image, sound and animation.

Introductory Lecture (2hrs) Content:
    • Multimedia and multimedia applications
    • Concepts of System Development Life Cycle methodology
    • How to apply this methodology in developing multimedia applications


Preparation Session (3hrs):
   a. Students are expected to understand:
       1. Adobe® Flash® environment
       2. Drawing and working with colour and graphics
       3. Working with Layers, Buttons and Movie Clips
       4. How to create animations and shape transformations
       5. Working with sound

    b. Students are expected to understand:
       1. The Adobe® Dreamweaver® interface
       2. How to define a site
       3. How to establish web links
       4. Working with text, images and multimedia elements
       5. Setting up Tables, Frames and Form.

Section 2. Project Specification

1. Learning Outcomes assessed (as taken from the DMD)
All Learning Outcomes specified in the Definitive Module Documentation are assessed as part of this
miniproject, the specific Learning Outcomes are:
Knowledge and Understanding
   • Be able to analyse and breakdown problem tasks into manageable steps.
    •   Integrate previous and concurrent learning and to use it to solve technology-based problems.
    •   Be able to describe the project life-cycle appropriately.
    •   Be able to select appropriate Multimedia Technology and techniques for a given situation.

Skills and Attributes
    • Produce a solution to a defined Multimedia Technology problem.
    •   Carry out a simple critical evaluation of their solution.
    •   Demonstrate an ability to work effectively in a teams, small groups and individually.
    •   Demonstrate an ability to manage time and resources effectively.


2. Project Title: Personal Multimedia Portfolio

7. Day 1

Expected Outcomes for the day:
Students working individually must apply System Development Life Cycle methodology to design and
implement their portfolio. They are required to produce a portfolio development report with the following
headings to record outcomes of each stage during the development.
    1. Setting goals

    2.   Defining target audience
    3.   Deriving user requirements
    4.   Organising contents based on user requirements
    5.   Designing navigation
    6.   Storyboarding

Assessment criteria: the way in which the work has been planned and managed, appropriate goals and
user requirements defined, correct Content Flowchart and Navigation Diagram produced, proper Storyboard
created, presentation of the report.
Key Tasks:
    • Set goals for their personal multimedia portfolio
   •     Define target audience and derive user requirements for the application
   •     Design portfolio by using Content Flowchart, Navigation Diagram and Storyboard to meet user
         requirements
   •     Produce portfolio development report
   •     Create text, graphics and animation elements for the portfolio

8. Day 2

Expected Outcomes for the day:
By the end of Day 2, students are expected to create and manipulate a range of media elements such as
text, image, sound and animation by using Flash or Flash and Dreamweaver.

Students should complete their personal multimedia portfolio based on the development report produced on
Day 1. The final product should be burned on a CD for submission on Day 2.

Assessment criteria: the way in which the work has been managed, the creation of the personal portfolio,
the range of media elements used and the justification of whether goals and user requirements are met.

Key Tasks:
   • Create text, graphic and animation elements for the portfolio
    •    Implement portfolio framework and integrate with different media elements produced
    •    Test and evaluate the portfolio based on the user requirements and goals set in Day 1
    •    Burning of final version of portfolio and technical demonstration

9. Facilitator guidance (key ideas to draw out from students):
Day 1: following the right sequence of stages in SDLC; producing Content Flowcharts, Navigation Diagrams
and Storyboards in the right format.
Day 2: implementing the portfolio according to the design made on Day 1; making sure all the user
requirements are met.


10. Required Resources: Laboratory Facilities and Teaching Support.

    Laboratory Resources:
    1. PC Workstations with digital capture facilities, CD ROM writer and headphone; application authoring
       with Flash, Dreamweaver, Adobe® Photoshop® and Adobe® Premiere®
    2. One rewritable CD per student

    Teaching Resources:
    3. Day 1: briefing pack containing instructions for the day with report requirements
    4. Day 2: briefing pack for the day

Section 3. Project Day 1 Brief
Key Tasks for the Day

   1. Setting goals for your personal multimedia portfolio
      Define the purposes of your application (What is it for?)

   2. Defining target audience
      Specify target audience, including their age, education background (Who is it for?)

   3. Deriving user requirements for your portfolio
      Talk to your audience and find out their expectations (How much/what content, what media types
      should be provided?)

   4. Organising contents based on user requirements
      Structure your contents into topics and visualise it using Content Flowchart. (What topics are
      included?)

   5. Designing navigation
      Based on your Content Flowchart, identify the navigation links between different topics (How users
      can navigate within your site?)

   6. Storyboarding
      Sketch out each key screen to show an overview of the content and functions on each screen with
      brief notes detailing the screen elements and actions users can take. The layout design should be
      appropriate to serve the purpose of your application (storyboards can be hand drawn.)

   7. Create text, graphics and animation elements for your portfolio


Expected Outcomes

   1.   One page of A4 detailing your goals, target audience and user requirements
   2.   One Content Flowchart
   3.   One Navigation Diagram
   4.   Storyboards

Section 4. Project Day 2 Brief
Key Tasks for the Day

    1. Create text, graphic and animation elements for your portfolio

    2. Implement portfolio framework and integrate different media elements produced based on your
       design developed on Day 1

    3. Test and evaluate your portfolio based on your user requirements and goals set on Day 1

    4. Demonstrate your portfolio (starting at 5.00pm)

Expected Outcomes

By the end of Day 2, you are expected to submit the final product of your personal multimedia portfolio on a
CD.

  • 2. Mini Project- Personal Multimedia Portfolio Section 1. Project Introduction Project Title: Personal Multimedia Portfolio Project Objectives: (technical, specific to this project) To demonstrate abilities to: • Design and implement multimedia applications • Apply System Development Life Cycle methodology • Create and manipulate a range of media elements such as image, sound and animation Project Summary: (50 words max) This project requires students to apply the System Development Life Cycle methodology to design and implement their personal multimedia portfolios for specific target audiences, with proper use of different media elements including image, sound and animation. Introductory Lecture (2hrs) Content: • Multimedia and multimedia applications • Concepts of System Development Life Cycle methodology • How to apply this methodology in developing multimedia applications Preparation Session (3hrs): a. Students are expected to understand: 1. Adobe® Flash® environment 2. Drawing and working with colour and graphics 3. Working with Layers, Buttons and Movie Clips 4. How to create animations and shape transformations 5. Working with sound b. Students are expected to understand: 1. The Adobe® Dreamweaver® interface 2. How to define a site 3. How to establish web links 4. Working with text, images and multimedia elements 5. Setting up Tables, Frames and Form. Page 2 of 7

Learning Outcomes assessed (as taken from the DMD) All Learning Outcomes specified in the Definitive Module Documentation are assessed as part of this miniproject, the specific Learning Outcomes are: Knowledge and Understanding • Be able to analyse and breakdown problem tasks into manageable steps. • Integrate previous and concurrent learning and to use it to solve technology-based problems. • Be able to describe the project life-cycle appropriately. • Be able to select appropriate Multimedia Technology and techniques for a given situation. Skills and Attributes • Produce a solution to a defined Multimedia Technology problem. • Carry out a simple critical evaluation of their solution. • Demonstrate an ability to work effectively in a teams, small groups and individually. • Demonstrate an ability to manage time and resources effectively. 2. Project Title: Personal Multimedia Portfolio 3. Day 1 Expected Outcomes for the day: Students working individually must apply System Development Life Cycle methodology to design and implement their portfolio. They are required to produce a portfolio development report with the following headings to record outcomes of each stage during the development. 1. Setting goals Page 3 of 7

Storyboarding Assessment criteria: the way in which the work has been planned and managed, appropriate goals and user requirements defined, correct Content Flowchart and Navigation Diagram produced, proper Storyboard created, presentation of the report. Key Tasks: • Set goals for their personal multimedia portfolio • Define target audience and derive user requirements for the application • Design portfolio by using Content Flowchart, Navigation Diagram and Storyboard to meet user requirements • Produce portfolio development report • Create text, graphics and animation elements for the portfolio 8. Day 2 Expected Outcomes for the day: By the end of Day 2, students are expected to create and manipulate a range of media elements such as text, image, sound and animation by using Flash or Flash and Dreamweaver. Students should complete their personal multimedia portfolio based on the development report produced on Day 1. The final product should be burned on a CD for submission on Day 2. Assessment criteria: the way in which the work has been managed, the creation of the personal portfolio, the range of media elements used and the justification of whether goals and user requirements are met. Key Tasks: • Create text, graphic and animation elements for the portfolio • Implement portfolio framework and integrate with different media elements produced • Test and evaluate the portfolio based on the user requirements and goals set in Day 1 • Burning of final version of portfolio and technical demonstration 9. Facilitator guidance (key ideas to draw out from students): Day 1: following the right sequence of stages in SDLC; producing Content Flowcharts, Navigation Diagrams and Storyboards in the right format. Day 2: implementing the portfolio according to the design made on Day 1; making sure all the user requirements are met. 10. Required Resources: Laboratory Facilities and Teaching Support. Laboratory Resources: 1. PC Workstations with digital capture facilities, CD ROM writer and headphone; application authoring with Flash, Dreamweaver, Adobe® Photoshop® and Adobe® Premiere® 2. One rewritable CD per student Teaching Resources: 3. Day 1: briefing pack containing instructions for the day with report requirements 4. Day 2: briefing pack for the day Page 4 of 7

Setting goals for your personal multimedia portfolio Define the purposes of your application (What is it for?) 2. Defining target audience Specify target audience, including their age, education background (Who is it for?) 3. Deriving user requirements for your portfolio Talk to your audience and find out their expectations (How much/what content, what media types should be provided?) 4. Organising contents based on user requirements Structure your contents into topics and visualise it using Content Flowchart. (What topics are included?) 5. Designing navigation Based on your Content Flowchart, identify the navigation links between different topics (How users can navigate within your site?) 6. Storyboarding Sketch out each key screen to show an overview of the content and functions on each screen with brief notes detailing the screen elements and actions users can take. The layout design should be appropriate to serve the purpose of your application (storyboards can be hand drawn.) 7. Create text, graphics and animation elements for your portfolio Expected Outcomes 1. One page of A4 detailing your goals, target audience and user requirements 2. One Content Flowchart 3. Implement portfolio framework and integrate different media elements produced based on your design developed on Day 1 3. Test and evaluate your portfolio based on your user requirements and goals set on Day 1 4. Demonstrate your portfolio (starting at 5.00pm) Expected Outcomes By the end of Day 2, you are expected to submit the final product of your personal multimedia portfolio on a CD. Page 6 of 7
