AIMS OF EDUCATION
• While initiating a new policy, a diligent
officer of the civil services, known as
“William Hunter” view the problems of
Muslims in detail, he advised the
government in this connection regarding the
education of Muslims:
• We should educate Muslim boys and girls
according to our methodology. Give freedom
to obey the religion. we intercept their
religion and make some of laws which dodge
them away from the education of their
religion. the next generations of Muslims will
also follow and adopt the path paving on
which the Hindus have becoming liberal
minded today.
Continue…
• In previous they were the most
extreme and prejudiced nation.
Tolerance means they will not remain
extreme and bigots as like their
elders, this tolerance will give relief
them from their ruthless crimes and
activities as they did in past in the
name of religion.
Continue….
• Accepting the aforementioned
recommendations, Lord Meu, the viceroy of
India, amended the previous educational
policy in 1871. Muslims allowed to open the
their own separate schools and colleges. By
this relaxation Sir Sayed Ahmad Khan
founded a most modern college in the Ali
Garh in 1875. in 1922 this college was
transformed into a most famous university. It
is the famous university who plays a vital
role in grooming mind and building
characters of the Muslims of Pakistan and
Bangladesh. The modern generations of the
above mentioned countries are the outcomes
of that colleges.
Continue…
• The aim of English government
behind the foundation of that college
was that in words of Williams Hunter.
• Create weakness and slackness in
the devotion and commands of their
religion. Furthermore, they were not
remain biggot as like their elders.
Continue…
• However and what ever the services
of the Ali Garh College and other
Islamic colleges. But the educated
students of these colleges groomed
and educate Islamic education. In the
same manner as the “William Hunter”
predicted. The association with
Islam, in these institutions, was mere
verbal expression. This was the Sir
Syed Ahmed Khan, who row the
seeds of hypocrisy and double
standards in Ali Garh.
Continue…
* Sir Syed, himself did not like the religious
education as whole and he also clearly told
to the curriculum committee regarding that.
* But the quantity of Islamic literature is
accumulated moderately in the curriculum
which does not affect the English education.
• Sir syed also had some political and cultural
motives in his mind along with religious
motives. He expressed his political views in
such a way:
• “We have to make the Muslims of India
enough capable and useful for the English
state (government).”
Continue…
• In inaugural ceremony of student union club
on August 26, 1884, Sir Syed had
expressed his political motives in detail in
these words: “if you people (spectators)
wish that a quality education thrive among
us, the best strategy (policy) this that you
should accumulate (combine) the crescent
and cross. Some Indian and English friends
think that it is impossible. But in my
personal opinion a day will come when both
combines.
• (Tareekh Madrasatul Olorn Ali Gurh, By:
Syed Iftikhar Alim Marharut, pg. 125).
Continue…
• Crescent means the ‘first day moon and the
cross means saleeb’, these are specific
symbols of two religions (Islam and
Christianity)
• In first clause Sir Syed wishes to make
Muslims a useful tool for the English
Government but he made heroic in the 2nd
sentence by expressing that he intends to
prepare a new accumulated syrup (amalgam)
of Islam and Christianity. Every scholar can
feel the heat and seriousness of the
outcomes of that step.
Continue…
5. Sir Syed defines the motive of the
acquisition of the western education in there
words:
• The real aims of this college is that it may
promote such European sciences and
literature an among the Muslims in general
and specially among the well known and
reputed Muslim families and produced a sect
which may be a Muslim regarding religion
and an Indian regarding blood and color but
an English regarding view, taste and
intellect.

• (Addresses and speeched concerning
Muhamamdan Angle Oriental College Ali
Garh, taken from Ibtida-e-Foundation
Lughat, complied by: Mohsinnual Malik, p. 2)
• Nawab Abdul Latif Khan, the president of
Mohammedan literacy society Kolkatta,
founded in 1862 for some kind of purpose as
mentioned above. He defines the goals f that
society:
• To persuade the youth of the upper class
families towards the acquiring of English
education. To make them liberal, tolerate
enlightened and to loyal to the English
government”.
Special distinctions of Ali Garh College
• This college was inaugurated on May24,
1875, the holyday of precious birthday of
Queen Victoria.
• The College was named as Angle
Muhammad Oriental College in English and
“Madrassatul Uloom” in Urdu.
• While returning from Qaiseri court Delhi,
Lord Liton, the viceroy of India, laid the
foundation of this college in 18th January
1877.
• The building of Ali Garh College was the
prototype of Cambridge university.
• College monogram included crescent and
date and as well as crown. Crown not
included in the monogram of any other
colleges of India.
Continue…
• The crown and crescent were engraved on
the doors of the hostels. So as to keep them
before the eyes of students all time.
Students get inspiration and remain loyal to
the British government.
• Names of British officers and English
proverbs were carved on different places in
the college.
• Majority of the teachers were English.
• It was necessary for both students and
teachers to wear English dress. Bt on the
other hand, Indian colleges teachers and
student wear simple dress.
Continue…
• A heavy amount of Rs. 10,000 was donated
(funded) by the Lord North, the viceroy of
India to the college.
• William Mune, Governor up, denoted Rs.
1,000 and many other British people also
gave donations to this college.
• The word ‘Alaik’was coined from Ali Garh
after pattern of Oxam (oxford) and contrib.
(Cambridge).
• The ends of education according of the
MacColay,
Continue…
• The main aims of this education was that to
produce such a group of people as is Indian
regarding blood and color but English
regarding views, taste and morality. So the
college was used properly for this purpose, it
is the only college ‘Angle Mohammeden
Oriental College”.
• On one hand Hindu colleges were produced
a lot of staunch simple Hindus. but on the
other hand Ali Garh College was producing
real black britishers.
Dominance of western ideas
• The group of most intelligent Muslim
students and nascent generations
accumulated (got admission) in Ali Garh
College. Mr. Back, the principal of the
college, would provide jobs to almost all
students by utilizing his personal links. The
door to the government jobs for the Muslims
have been shut from half a century age were
open wide for the students of that college as
never before. It was a most sophisticated
advertisement which attracting students from
the corners of the India.
Continue…
• Under the guidance of English teachers they
learned western education, western
language, western atticates.
• The westernism was developed in the social
circle of Indian Muslims after the foundation
of Ali Garh College.
• A Hindu writer write about Hindu lovers.
• “The people had been hypnotized to believe
in the cultrivism of their foreign rulers.”
• Education in Pakistan, By: Dr. Ishtiaq
Hussain Qureshi.
Change of views
After getting education from Ali Garh and
other colleges of such kind, such a Muslim
group moved forward as was absolutely
different to his elders in views and actions
they were brought up according to the
framework designed by the Britishers.
• Their general characteristics as under:
• They declare Islam and Muslim history as a
national heritage. But in practical life they
always give importance to the western
thoughts indispensable.
Continue…
• Despite having positive views, they shirk to
follow the Islamic shariah.
• They consider preliminary affairs of religion
sufficient. they do not believe in acquiring
knowledge from the religious scholars so
their religious information is absolutely
superficial (Mauj-e-Kausar, By: Sheikh
Muhammad Ibram, pg: 154).
• Their aim is to acquire the designation of
deputy collector in the government sector.
• They are the lovers of the materialism and
appearance, devoid of religious knowledge.
Continue…
• The loyalty of the ruler at all cost was their
principal of life.
• The believe in the Christian concept of
discrimination between the region and the
world. It is a lesson taught by the principal
Thaword Book.
• They accepted the western concept of being
a nation on the basis of a country.
• This elite group was the strong protector the
Muslims in the field of politics and
economics.
Continue…
• They know the tricks of both Hindu
and britishers comparatively well.
• During the 70 years, guidance of
Dareel Uloom Ali Garh, not a single
movement for the revival of religion
and social reform surged among the
Muslims.
Education differentiation between
Hindus and Muslims
• For training and education of the
modern generation, the English
government introduced their
fundamental principal of division.
Where they gave education of
western arts and skills to Hindus.
They also made them feel proud on
their religion and nation and their
culture.
British teachers
• British teachers were the lover of the Hindu
culture. They made schools and colleges
familiar to Hindu culture. In school and
college teachers and students wear simple
dress. The traditional way of living of Hindus
was not altered. While on other hand they
give modern education to Muslims and try to
weakened the in their Islamic education and
commands. In ali garh college every
students and teacher wear typical western
dress. Due to western culture and education,
educated Muslims cut away from their social
circle. They are not able to adjust in the
Muslim society.
Followers of ancient scholars
• In Ali Garh College, the modern generations of
Muslims were trained according to the plans of
British Government. There is no doubt that the
prosperous group of people were the follows of
modern Muslims.
• By this if some one sketch that the whole Muslim
nation was around the a one college then it is
totally false.
• Those Muslims who were groomed under the
guidance of Shah Wali Ullah and Mujahid-e-Milat
Syed Ahmad Shaheed nor they accept defeat
neither down their head in before British
government. They still believe in their religion
obey the commands of Islam. They stayed away
from practical politics but stayed to their religion.
Allama Shabeer said about these
scholars that:
“After the war of independence of 1857 they
were pushed back so badly that death
silence covered the whole country for many
years.. when they felt some relief then
frustration spread every where.
• That’s why this group get separation form
political circle and change their direction
towards the mudrassas. Where they
protected religious and educational
inheritance they were defeated but did not
admired the defeat and the Muslim nation
practically showed ignorance to government.

Some Indian and English friends think that it is impossible. But in my personal opinion a day will come when both combines. • (Tareekh Madrasatul Olorn Ali Gurh, By: Syed Iftikhar Alim Marharut, pg. 125).
