Cement Plant,
Obajana
In March 2003, Julius Berger Nigeria PLC
was awarded the contract for the civil works
and construction of process and auxiliary
buildings for a new cement factory. The plant
was to be located on a greenfield area of
350ha in Obajana, Kogi State.
Historically, a large percentage of Nigeria´s
demand for cement was covered through
imports. The construction of the Obajana
Cement Plant, with a maximum daily output
of 14,000 tons of high quality cement,
changed this situation and allowed the
importation of cement to be reduced
considerably.
Within a period of 24 months, two production
lines were completed by Julius Berger
Nigeria PLC including two 83m high raw mill
silos and four 60m high cement silos. The
work was carried out using pre-stressed
concrete and specially designed sliding
formwork.
All foundations, including bored pile
foundations for the silos, pre-heater, rotary
kiln and the ground slabs for several
departments of the two production lines and
as the foundation for the pre-crushers in the
quarry were part of Julius Berger Nigeria
PLC´s scope of work.
The design of the auxiliary buildings and
facilities such as the power plant, the water
storage tanks, the central control building
and twelve substations allowed for insitu
reinforced concrete using traditional
formwork methods.
An eight km long, elevated belt conveyor
was built from the quarry to the cement plant.
The foundation works as well as the pre-cast

were constructed by Julius Berger
Nigeria PLC.
The main quantities of work comprised
approx. 200,000cbm of reinforced
concrete and 36,000cbm of blinding
concrete; 25,000 tons of high tensile
steel; 240,000sqm of traditional and
84,100sqm of slip formwork.
All infrastructure works including
general earthworks and the construction
of roads and concrete paved areas, as
well as storm water drainage, were
designed and executed by Julius Berger
Nigeria PLC.
The project was handed over in
February 2005.
