Notas do Editor

  1. 1- Most of today's youth and adults who are in education spend the majority of their lives learning outside the walls of formal of education. 2- e-learning technologies like electronic books, text messaging, podcasting , wikis, blogs…to name a few are infiltrating higher education. Students want an engaging online learning experience. 2b-“Social and a learning network” is the ideal online learning environment for the academic community. 2c- Learning is content driven but social interaction ,such as sharing information and collaborating is a big part of online education.3-There is a changing role for instructors and educators, student expectations and the needs related to online learning. This type of teaching and learning requires planning, monitoring, facilitating learning through the online environment and developing the social skills to keep students engaged. 3b-Electronic Information environment has had a major impact on all of the world. Businesses, organizations, the entire world has had to adopt their “traditional” ways to fit in with the electronic information environment that we have today…
  2. Traditionally…Academic libraries are the learning and research centers of universities.1-Libraries are there to help broaden a students learning experience and encourage critical thinking and research skills. We are there to support and encourage inquiry and give our users the opportunity to go beyond the classroom and broaden their learning experience. 2-The library offers rich and authentic content, dedicated and knowledgeable staff with deep expertise and safe, trusted settings which invites and supports effective learning…3-Libraries can provide students and instructors with online activities that relate to critical and creative thinking to help broaden the students learning experience. 3b-The library is the central point of access to a wide range of digital resources and promotes leaning through online networks. The library provides a range of diverse resources. In short, the library is a place for curiosity, exploration and making sense of information.
  3. 1-The library needs to have a collection of online applications and tools that teachers and students use to engage leaning activities. The purpose is to engage and support learns in a collaborative learning environment. The library can do this by providing blogs, wikis, podcasts, library web page, resources that go beyond the classroom. Authoritative and relevant databases, as well as access to authentic, accurate, authoritative web sites need to come from the library to the college community. We need to have diverse resources that students can count on and access with ease. One of the libraries main purposes is to provide a central meeting point for learners and promote discussion and creation of new material through sharing. The Library is there to support learners and educators2- As mentioned Online tools that can be used are blogs to promote student collaboration and reflection, Wikis for online students collaboration podcasting for instructional use and the library web page as the meeting place with connections to all of the above.
  4. 1-Web 2.0 tools gives uses a positive experience with the library in the online environment. It allows discovery, learning, entertainment and personalization of content. 2-Web 2.0 help libraries in making web sites more efficient, promote the library in delivering content and in engaging users…web 2.0 gives libraries the opportunity to change and reinvent our virtual world, this will add value and trust in the users. 2b-When deciding upon a web 2.0 tool, the library needs to ask itself a few questions…what is the purpose of it, how they are going to implement the tools, who will use it and how will it be maintained 2c-Evaluate its current services, develop a clear plan of what it wants to accomplish and look for the best ways to achieve that. 3-Information literacy is more important now than ever- it is more crucial as a direct result of the web revolution and a need for more not less guidance in the selection, use and evaluation of information. We have a greater role to guide faculty students and others users in the best use of both print and online resources in the library. *It is our mission, to teach users to resist the total reliance upon and convenient information from the internet and use the best possible resources that are available to them. It is called Research, because it takes time to find the best results and information. If it was a one stop, then it would be called convenient-search… We are charged in this electronic, online education environment to have new initiatives for research and to establish a sound foundation for our practices, services and programs. We must be proactive and enhance and improve our credibility and status and value by going to the sources. Meeting with the faculty, sharing information with them, showing them that we have what they want to make their very difficult jobs just a little easier. Gone are the days of waiting for faculty to come to the library and student too because that was the only place to get information, now they can get it from their phones, so we must give them a reason to come to the library and the only way we will get them to do that is by being in their face and almost forcing our way into their curriculum, classrooms, and hammering them with the type of reliable information that they can not ignore…
  5. 1a-The library does not want or needs to ask for uncomfortable information, like full names and other personal data. Libraries do not want to drive users away from the website.2a-Collection development- the ability to create and adapt a collection development policy to satisfy its various users is a challenge and the need to an understanding of the needs of the new 21st century learner as well as the availability of the complexity of online and digital resources can be overwhelming. There is also the issues of fair use and copyright law as well as licensing.3a- The issue of the budget- there is a high level and demand for resources at a time of budget constraints yet user’s demands and expectations are high. Some solutions to this problem is consortia, obtaining funding for research, tough negotiations , rebuilding and rethinking collections, especially in the electronic markets and redirection and reallocation funds. 3b-Staff need to be crossed trained- each person in the library needs to know a little bit about each area- both in the physical space and the electronic space. Staff training and professional development offers promoting opportunities for staff to reach full potential. Ensuring that all staff has the skills and knowledge in the area of an information technology intensive environment is critical and provides proficiency in an environment that is constantly faced with new technological breakthroughs. Librarians and library staff need to play active roles in finding solutions to problems while adapting a new environment. Being a faculty librarian at an academic institution allows prime opportunity to be part of the teaching and active research groups. We need to attend the seminars, go to the courses or audit advance sources in order to remain viable and current. 2a-The challenges of moving a library to a more online environment – new systems and services, more PCs and other tech, re-organize and re-structure.Finding ways to exploit all form of digital and telecommunication technologies and finding new ways and means to provide feasible forms of collections, services and access to library materials. 2b-The new generation has exceedingly high expectations of the web and so do those users of an older generation. The changes in our society, quick developments of technology and the rapid changing web are just a few of the factors that we, as libraries are up against. (like an hour glass- the sand is quickly moving to the bottom) The library needs to use this changing time (opportunity) to rethink and reinvent themselves to find new ways to build partnerships and not only stay relevant, but become an essential part of the environment. 2d- Different generations and the changing usage patterns- we must always be evolving and changing with them. Many of today’s students do not use email. They text or use the iphone, facebook, but not email. We need to keep this in mind and allow for the electronic online library environment to change with the students. Nothing in the online world is static. It is constantly moving forward and the library needs to move with it.
  6. There is aneed for formal instruction in new skills, including info lit, visual literacy and technological literacy. We are the gurus of information and we must show our users how to find the best possible information as possible and know how to read and pick out the better choices when searching and retrieving information. Many assume that student already know how to work or learn in the online environment. But they don’t. Just like a traditional student learned how to use a book- today’s students need to learn how to use the internet and the resources available in an appropriate way. 2-The students have changed, but the educational materials have notThe learning styles of the 21st century learner- the library must know about the new materials and new tools, knowing how they work and how to find and use them in various formats. Present new info models and support teaching and learning for these new innovative students. 3-The expectations of delivery.Move beyond the traditional ways of delivering information and being open to new ways of servicing our users. We must be quick to implement and evaluate new products and services that are in step with the next generation.
  7. We can blame it all on Googel, Amazon, it is because of them that our users have become web savvy and they become frustrated with the library…but we can and need to learn from them. Libraries can also take advantage of technology and deliver our servers in the virtual space that most, if not all of our users have become accustomed to.Combing the library with the computer center is a clear indication of the fusion of components to provide new and better products and services.
  8. Web 2.0 tools have allow libraries to stay abreast with the rapid change. Many web 2.0 tools allow users to design, create, are flexibly and promote sharing, collaborations, interaction and personalization. 2.0 tools allows us to create a virtual space that not only offers authoritative information through our subscription databases, but gives our users a place to communicate with us, the librarians, and allows for communication between other library users and enables and expression of opinions and therefore allows us to be better. The library can provide recommendations lists, lists of useful books, books on certain topics, book reviews, present new library material, local news-Offer unique and useful information and people will visit and use the site and the tools that are available. Any new implementation of technology needs to have a good vision and execution.
  9. Web 2.0 is not really about the technology but about what we do with it and how we use it. Not all the web 2.0 tools are what’s best for the library, users, institution.RSS- news feeds, user suggestions for acquisitions, state of library through web site.Mashups to show the location of the library, present videos about the library services, provide current news on popculture…Digital reference services using email, web forms or video conferencing “Ask a librarian” service should be implanted into library websites24 hour electronic library with reference services and availability of reserves like e-reservesOnline reservations and renewal of library materialOnline document delivery, like access to CCC or e-reserves -Growth in mobile devises. You can text your question to the library with the help of google and application for the iphone are being used and are driving new services-QR codes- it’s a bar code that holds information that your cell phone will understand and interpret that information into readable content-Twitter- reference and instant answers to questions , twitter can be very useful-Virtual reference- Instant chat application or using a live video site like ustream. Tv, virtual reference is more doable and approachable -Increased collaboration- between the neighboring college libraries, faculty, staff and using social media tools like twitter twiddla and other white board and online sharing applications. -Teaching social media classes- like how to stay safe- what and how employers are using social media to find info on people. Trends in social media are a must for libraries- when used properly, they can be a great tool to save money and promote library services and collections.- Google applications- google docs, google voice for text messaging or any other google applicationWeb 2.0 is not really about the technology but about what we do with it and how we use it.it is only as useful as the users make it-it can only live and become valuable based on the number of users that interact with it. -The online learning environment provide diverse opportunities for leaning and requires flexibility of the library staff.
  10. GoogleDocs While many think of this as a collaborative online writing or word processing toolSlideShare provides a way to share already created Powerpoint presentations online, tag them, email them, get comments on them, and get html code for embedding them to your own blog, wiki or website. You can add audio, notes, and even YouTube videos to your Powerpoint presentations in SlideShare.VoiceThread "is an online media album that can hold essentially any type of media (images, documents and videos) and allows people to make comments in 5 different ways - using voice (with a microphone or telephone), text, audio file, or video (with a webcam) - and share them with anyone they wish.AnimotoUpload photos, select music and Animoto renders a music video for you. Quick and easy. A 30-second video is freeGlogster Create an interactive online poster with links, photos, text, stickers, sound, music, animation and more-These types of Social bookmarking tools allow students to interact and share ideas to store, organize, search, and manage information for themselves- in a way that makes sense to them. -Our students know the importance and the power that is behind online technologies and they use it…all we have to do, is use it too.
  11. The library and librarians need to be agents of change. We must expand our roles and responsibilities, take initiative to offer new services and products, build relationships with those inside and outside of the organization, be creative in thinking and looking at options that we have, for the good of our users. -Librarians have to reinvent themselves through continuous learning and taking on new and challenging roles. A positive attitude, strong sense of service, expertise in information gathering will allow others to see our value. -This is a great time to be a librarian and to be in education. Our world, society and culture are changing. This is the great information age and librarians are lucky…we already have the know how on finding great information, now all we need to do is get it out there, to our students, so they can become life long learners and in the mean time, we need to have fun. d
