Notas do Editor

  1. Let’s start with introductions – Let’s give our names and something that makes us unique. I will start.
  2. The idea of global citizenship has been around for along time – back when I was your age this word was thrown around – but the meaning was much different. Opportunities were there to explore the world but reality was the world was still what was brought in on tv, newspapers etc. and your immediate local community. Now we have the internet and more importantly social media that has created an incredibly connected world as well as an ability for us all to be global citizens in a much more global way.Today’s workshop is to dive into what this really means to be a Global Citizen in Social World, we are going to talk a little bit aboutIntroductions and a bit about our personal brandsRules of Online EngagementOnline LeadershipGlobal Citizenship in a social world and what it means to you as young adults in pursuing your own dream.
  3. Personal Branding: What’s important to know?Be distinctiveBe aspriational but accurateFocus on how as well as what – how will you deliver your brand, how will you get there, not just what you’re hoping to do – the story is part of the process.Exercise: Work in groups at your table – come up with 2-4 things your table learned from personal branding workshop last week. 5 minutesDiscuss personal branding tips.Exercise: With mom, Brainstorm a list of what they would like to include their personal brand.
  4. What can you say in 140 characters? It’s important to be brief and speak in language that others understand. 140 characters is the # characters allowed for Twitter and a good way to learn to be brief. Notice examples:Exercise – fill in the blanks with your own bio that reflects your personal brand as well as your personality/communities.Now say it in 140 characters – bio about yourself in 140 characters – fill in the blank exercise. Give examples of Abby and one other.5 minutesShare your 140 bio- if you wantSome social media tips for sharing your personal brand:Use your own voiceIt takes time to build an online presence with a personal brand identificationBe consistent with your message and appearance – same profile picture/logo/name etc.Connect with influencers in your fieldCreate a personal blog/social media profiles – URL is important
  5. Rules of Online egagement – it’s true there are rules – Online you will see it’s a wild west – but you will also see that people with good reputations follow certain rules – rules you may not know about – but that are there. For each person their rules of engagement may be slighly different – and for each it will depend on a few things – what is their personal brand, what is their level of privacy expectation, what are their personal values and what are the values of the communties they are involved in (audience)Remember regardless of how private or locked down you make your online presence – privacy is not 100% guaranteed – so you must set your own rules with your parents ahead of time.
  6. Exercise:where mom’s work together and girls work together to come up with items that mom’s or daughters thing other can do to support safety – they will each have a piece of post-it easel paper to put their ideas on. 10 minutesPresentation from leader of group
  7. Privacy can be tricky right – you are online and therefore your information will get out there.A few things to think about:Regardless of how private or locked down your FB or other accounts are anything you say is public record – if you put it in digital it can be reproduced this includes Email, Twitter, Tumblr anywhere you are. Even if you have an account (such as twitter where you don’t identify who you are.) Always be thinking does this represent who I want to be and how I want to be perceived. Give example of Abby’s personal facebook page versus her public pages. How to keep private pages private. Abby’s public presence and people asking to join private page. Also email address that Abby uses for public presence (goes into Mom’s inbox)Respecting your parents and their guidance – regardless of your age you need your parents help - be appreciate that they are involved and looking at what you do.Decide as you create channels – which are private and which are public – again remembering private is never fully private.Example: Abby’s personal fb is private – locked down and all – rules for allowing friends much more strict- Abby abides by this as she has seen a few of the personalities on her other channels.Abby’s other online profiles are all public- meaning anyone can follow, friend, join her.Any channel can have a private function – but you have to know how to set it up that way and abide by rules to keep it that way.
  8. Offline you are a big fish in a small pond- everyone knows you at school and in your community, online you are a small fish in a big pond – people don’t know you and will judge by what you say or do.Personal Brand affects your online presence and should be reflected in all channels public and private – Abby has some specific rules for bothHer rules of engagement on her public channels will be much more brand centered than private channel. But some rules are same on all channels:No swearing, no negativity, no picking on someone, be postive, be focused, don’t say mean things about parents, families or friends – don’t give personal information out on public space. Some rules for public channels: Never give location information or other personal information to anyone, do not respond to private or public messages that make you uncomfortable (and tell your mother), tell mother if there is someone you feel is unsafe (don’t answer if you feel unsafe or awkward) it’s ok to block people who make you feel unsafe (again tell your mother) Be positive, be focused – if you have a goal or a dream make sure that your accounts are focused on that subject matter as people will want to hear from you on that, be thoughtful if you push or sell your ideas all the time expect people to tune you out.Exercise: Mother and Daughter – come up with a list of 5-10 public channels rules of engagement and 5-10 private channel rules for daughters online presence – 10 minutes
  9. Exercise: everyone write down at least one thing that represents what it means to be a leader on post it notes and put it on the board upfront. Talk about the notes posted. TrustConvictionHonestlyValuesBeliefsEthicsCharacterWays to be a leader online: Excecise Girls and Moms Separate ---come up with examples of being a leader online – each group 5 examples – or if you have examples of not being a leader you can use those too – use realife but change names/etc.Be real, but be thoughtfulAlways ask yourself – am I being a leader?Share with other, encourage othersBe positive online – do not participate in the negative stuff you see whether it’s a School Slam Twitter account or on Facebook, or even a group message of friends arguing on FB – don’t participate – arguments and other negative things should happen in person or on the phone – never put things in writing that you would not be proud of your parents seeing.
  10. Exercise: What does it mean to you to be a global citizen? Ask the group and put answers on board? First video…play second video.Oxfam see a Global Citizen as someone who:is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own role as a world citizen;respects and values diversity;has an understanding of how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically and environmentally;is outraged by social injustice;participates in and contributes to the community at a range of levels from local to global;is willing to act to make the world a more sustainable place;takes responsibility for their actions.
  11. Some general characteristics of a global citizen – online and offline – walk through each
  12. Start with What are your dreams?Create a list of your dreams and goals. What do you care about what are your passions?Your desire to change the world? How do you build and use your presence to be a global citizen?
  13. What are some examples of teens using social media to be global citizens? Have them give examples if they can….
