What kind of media institutionmight distribute your media
product and why?
A film distribution company is an organization that handles the release of films
into cinemas, home video, online streaming and TV airings. Research into the
target demographics of our film shows that it has widespread mainstream
appeal; therefore it will be released through one of the main studios. In
Hollywood, there are six major studios:
 Disney
 Universal
 20th Century Fox
 Paramount
 Columbia
 Warner Bros.
If a film has less commercial appeal or falls into a niche that isn’t filled by the
main brand, then it may be released using a sub-brand. For example, Universal
releases art-house and indie films through Focus Features, while Disney releases
films intended for older audiences through Touchstone Pictures.
If I had the choice, I would likely choose Universal as my distributor because they
have a solid record with similar films to mine, such as Scarface. More recently,
they also have several thriller films that have high domestic grosses, such as The
Bourne Ultimatum ($227,471,070) and Fast & Furious 7 ($352,786,830).
My film would go to large multiplexes as this ensures that as many people can
see the film at once, increasing profit per showing. Since my film is mainstream,
it will also increase exposure and make the film accessible for everybody.
Finally, our target audience was shown to be diverse but with a slightly greater
emphasis on people aged 35 and over. For this reason, I will focus advertising on
channels that attract an older audience such as ITV and 5 USA, with fewer
advertisements on channels that attract younger watches such as Sky 1. Internet
adverts such as banners and on videos on YouTube can also help, especially as
the latter has a wide age demographic.
In conclusion, I believe that these factors can combine to make our film
commercially successful because our distribution strategy specifically targets
parts of our target audience. With some creative accounting, the film can easily
make a huge profit for the filmmakers.
