3. Reading
Directions: Read the following passage carefully.
Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore, seeing we are also compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Today, we are going to learn a few Bible Customs when it came to running the race. Running a race in Biblical times was set up a lot like today's Olympics.
4. A typical stadium was about six hundred feet long, as it was wide and deep. "Isn't that interesting?" There was entrances into the stadium through ONE door only, as every other part of the stadium was closed.
There were tiers, or bleachers, were people sat to watch the races. However, at the end of the track where all the racers ran --by foot, there was a judge sitting there holding a prize. Everyone who ran the race
5. had their eyes set on the prize.
However, each runner started at one square pillar, and midway of the race they ran through two pillars. Each of these pillars where called the "mark" that we read about in Philippians 3:14. It is interesting that every runner 'wore' no clothes. Each person trained to take off every weight because this weight of their clothes could hinder.
"Could this be why David danced so hard before the Lord with no clothes?"
6. According to Jewish Customs, this saying could be true.
All throughout the word of God we read statements such as, "Run the Race!" or "Fight the fight of faith."
Let us continue to run this race, pressing towards the mark! One more thing, "What do the pillars represent?" Well, there was three pillars present as the "MARK" as each one represents the fullness of who God is. As well, remember "Each of you are surrounded by a cloud of
7. witnesses" who are encouraging you onward.
I pray this has been a blessing to you today.
