Consumer Participation at ReGen (APSAD Conference 2013)

  1. Established with the use of surplus money, the chief aim of the role is to facilitate consumer participation. It is not a representative position, it is not a policy advocacy position. Rather it is a capacity building that addresses issues of work place culture, and attitudes to consumer participation, to not only ensure that consumer take on representative roles but that workers engage with consumers undertaking roles in the organisation.
  2. The role of the leadership group is to inform and guide the practice of Consumer Participation at Uniting Care ReGen. ti was this group that established the consumer participation model that serves as a the backbone to the Consumer Participation Facilitator Role. A consumer worker, a person who is using ReGen services is part of this leadership group. Currently this group meets monthly.
  3. An essential aspect of the role and the work is to ensure that the practice of Consumer Participation is organisational wide. At the outset of my appointment, I commenced networking within and outside of ReGen. First of I needed to understand the organisation and the services delivered but also, I needed to establish some sort of relationship with staff. Staff needed to know who I am and what I do. I am still in the process of doing this in some respects, especially when I come across shift workers I have not met as yet or simply I need to explain the role again. People may not be as offay with the term and practice of consumer participation as we my expect people should be. Meetings with consumer participation practitioners in mental health and housing had greatly influenced my approach to this role.
