Northumbria University is exploring broader implementation of ORCID identifiers across researcher career paths and the research cycle through a partnership. This will involve encouraging graduate students to get an ORCID ID during enrollment and induction, capturing IDs for the annual HESA return, and integrating ORCID into the professional development and student records systems. Next steps involve promoting ORCID in research training and using ORCID membership features to streamline sign-up and identifier capture.

Embedding ORCID across researcher career paths
1. Embedding ORCID across researcher
career paths
A Jisc-ARMA Pilot Project at
Northumbria University
2. A research-rich, business-focused, professional university
with a global reputation for academic excellence…between
2013 and 2018 we will:
• Build global reputation, market position and revenue
streams
• Grow high quality research and use it to drive
excellence in all of our activities
• Maximise student and stakeholder satisfaction
• Strengthen operational efficiency and effectiveness, and
foster a culture of continuous improvement

7. Embedding ORCID across researcher
career paths
(Jisc-ARMA ORCID pilot project)
“This project provides an opportunity to explore
broader implementation of ORCID at different
stages of researcher career paths and
throughout the research cycle via a multi-
stakeholder partnership across the institution.”

New HESA field for 2014/15: ORCID identifier:
“Providers are encouraged to return the ORCID
identifier for students on research programmes”
How to capture this for annual HESA return?
Online enrolment an option, but too early?
9. PGR Progression (FT example)
• Online enrolment
• Faculty induction and University induction with Library presentersEnrolment and Induction
• Formal monthly record of progress, including meeting with Supervisor
• Meet with whole team minimum every 6 monthsMonthly Supervision
• Month 3: Approval of project plan, ethics status, resources, Professional
Development Training PlanProject Approval
• Month 10, 22: Update on all aspects covered above
• Continuing online enrolment in month 12 and 24Annual Progression 1&2
• Month 30: Check if ready or not
• If not ready, final extra Annual Progression submitted month 34Submission Readiness

19. Next steps at Northumbria
Continuing to promote and support ORCID as
part of our regular programmes of research skills
training and development.
Using our membership to make sign-up more
streamlined for users and to capture identifiers
more effectively.

Research at Northumbria University
Research focused environment at Northumbria University: https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/research/
REF2014 submission double the size of RAE2008.
World leading or higher in all areas
Biggest rise in research power of any University (from 80 to 50)
Increase in QR from £3.1m to £6.5m
Recruitment, workload model, changes to provision of research support

‘One University’ approach to working – sharing information and working collaboratively with other services
First steps with ORCID – introducing a secondary identifier to Northumbria Research Link, our EPrints repository: http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/
Encouraging voluntary sign up, with support from the Scholarly Publications Team (one librarian and three full time equivalent library assistants)
Some academic staff had already signed up and others easily saw the benefit. Some resistance due to the range of IDs and profile tools available.
Sought endorsement from Research Advisory Group (an operational group reporting to Research and Innovation Committee, chaired by deputy vice chancellor for teaching and learning and including deans for research and innovation from each faculty)
Allowed us to promote ORCID with the backing of the University – that, of the range of identifiers available, this is the one the University supports and will integrate with its systems
Still voluntary, but promoted more heavily. Promotional posters in Research Zone, inclusion in email signatures, including in emails requesting full text or about RCUK compliance.
Picture from the Northumbria Research Conference, showing staff from the Scholarly Publications team assisting with ORCID registration.
An annual research conference held in May, an opportunity for staff to share papers with very early findings and for postgraduate researchers to present posters or short presentations about their research area.
Research Support team had an area in the central hall with information about our services and facilities (two laptops, two ipads, lots of staff) to sign up for ORCID. Offered a prize draw with £50 of vouchers. Around 100 sign ups, including the vice chancellor (good opportunity for promotion on social media!)
Repeating this on 20th May at the 2015 conference.
Also included ORCID in research skills sessions– Measuring Your Research Performance, Maximising Your Research Profile, Open Access at Northumbria
Found this approach of integrating ORCID into existing training worked best for us, as we encourage, but do not require, sign up.
Researcher Development Week runs for one week each semester, with an additional Research Event in June. The sessions map to the Vitae Researcher Development Framework and are available online (examples in notes)
Library at the end of processes – no flow through lifecycle.

“At Northumbria, the University Library has been proactively promoting and supporting ORCID implementation, both as an identifier in the institutional repository Northumbria Research Link (NRL) and as part of a well-established research skills programme. This project provides an opportunity to explore broader implementation of ORCID at different stages of researcher career paths and throughout the research cycle via a multi-stakeholder partnership across the institution.”
An opportunity to work with colleagues elsewhere in the University to embed ORCID into different stages of the research and publication lifecycle.
Two use cases – the first involving postgraduate progression and the second using ORCID as a registration standard in our open journal systems publication platform, Northumbria Journals: http://journals.northumbria.ac.uk/
First use case took precedence, as it involved HESA return – a definite deadline and the need to fit in with schedule for PGR progression system.

Continuing enrolment an option, but enrolment too early for new starters?
PGR formal process explained:
Monthly minimum supervision requirements
Series of research milestones. Some are progression points, equivalent to an exam
Almost all are now or soon to be online processes used by students and academics
A further new online process is PDRT
PDRT is a summary of planned and completed development and training activity
Based on Vitae’s Researcher Development, structured into four domains covering the knowledge, behaviours and attributes of researchers
PDRT runs through programme, available all the time, but monitored at progression milestones. ORCID is built into this, and will be mandatory…
We developed SRS (SITS and e-vision) in house ourselves, niche and non-standard area
Where we are with implementation at the moment - Supervision, Project Approval and PDRT all live
This is how the system looks…
Research tab shows processes that can be accessed at this point in the programme…
If ORCID ID hasn’t been entered yet, you can do so here…
The system provided by the graduate school is supported by the University Library’s Scholarly Publications Team, who assist with signing up and using ORCID: http://library.northumbria.ac.uk/info-researchers/orcid
A self-service approach to support.
Ask4Help Online, the library’s self service help portal, for example: http://ask4help.northumbria.ac.uk/faq/34692
The Learning Support team also provided video and print guides to using the e:vision portal, including how to add your ORCID number: http://nuweb2.northumbria.ac.uk/library/skillsplus/sublist.html?evpgr
