Saint Nicholas of Myra is the historical basis for the figure of Santa Claus. He was a 4th century Greek Christian bishop in modern-day Turkey, known for his generous gifts to the poor. His remains were moved to Bari, Italy in 1087, where they attracted pilgrims and economic activity. Over time, his legend associated him with bringing gifts at Christmas and became conflated with English and Dutch traditions of Father Christmas. He is the patron saint of many groups including children and sailors.
