2. Introduction
The history of film began in the 1880s when there
first movie camera was invented but it wasn’t until
1922 that sound was introduced but still most films
were silent until the 1930s (around this time, films
were being dubbed in different languages and
played all over the world). The first ever cinema
was built in 1895 and became popular very quickly
that by 1896, they had been introduced to almost
everywhere in the world.
3. Specialists
When the first films were made, the film-makers did
everything themselves, from thinking up the story
to building the sets, directing the actors, framing the
shots and working the camera.
It wasn’t until 1903 that it was the norm to have
specialist camera operators.
4. First colour film
The first colour film was made in 1902 but this was
hand tinted to create colour, the first natural colour
movie was made in 1918 called “Cupid Angling”,
but this film was silent.
5. Sound
In 1927, Warner bros released a feature length film
called “Jazz Singer” which was mostly silent but
contained what is generally regarded as the first
synchronized dialogue (and singing) in a feature
film.
