On October 2, 2006, Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the West Nickel Mines School in Pennsylvania and took 10 young Amish girls hostage at gunpoint. He allowed the boys and adults to leave but kept the girls, binding their hands and feet. When police arrived in response to a 911 call, Roberts shot the girls execution-style, killing 5 and injuring 5, before taking his own life. The Amish community responded with forgiveness for Roberts and his family. A new school was later built to replace the one where the tragedy occurred.
