“Verbal Power Plan”

Verbal Power Plan: Everyone has a fear of public speaking and we shouldn’t expect much
different from young learners. The Verbal Power Plan is an 8 lesson Public Speaking module
based on Impromptu Speaking methods, which is designed to reduce those fears. The Format
of each lesson is very simple. Just follow the easy step by step instructions. The fundamentals
are repeated but the topics change each lesson. As the lessons progress and the format
becomes more familiar, we begin to the confidence emerge.

The materials are appropriate for children of all ages. Everything is extremely flexible and can
be easily adapted to any classroom environment. All listening exercises are Copyright to

                                    Lesson 1
Note to Teacher: Class Time : 40-90 min depending on the number and level of students.

1.Show the first slide and explain that Impromptu Speaking is done with little preparation. It is a
speaking technique used in Job Interviews, Debate settings and even Social events like Bday
  parties.

2.Show the next slide and explain that there is an easy to remember system for doing Impromptu
Speaking. You can simply use the 5 fingers on your hand to remember your Introduction, 3 main
  points and Conclusion.

3.Show the Personal Introduction slide. Give the students 10 minutes to prepare an Impromptu
version of their Personal Introduction. SPEECH TIME: 1 - 2mins. OPTIONAL: You could give the
  students a demonstration.

4.Choose students to come up and give their Personal Introduction. Depending on their level,
they may not be very good at this stage. Most students don’t know how to give a Wrap-up
  Summary conclusion.

  5.Give positive feedback.

                                    Lesson 2
Note to Teacher: Class Time : 40-90 min depending on the number of students.

    CLASS EXERCISES:

1.NOTE: The slides are categorized into 3 seasons. Show the slides of the various Holidays. Elicit
responses by asking questions. There are also some negative thoughts. (10 min) OPTIONAL:
Replace any slide with pictures you are comfortable with discussing.

2.Listening exercise. Audio file can be downloaded from Word scramble for lower level students.
Gap-Fill for more advanced students. This is designed to be a reinforcement of the things
discussed previously. It will also provide the students with information they need to fill in the
Persuasion Graphic Organizer at the end of the lesson. (10 min) OPTIONAL: Teacher can read the
    script to the class. http://www.listenaminute.com/h/holidays.mp3

    INDIVIDUAL SPEAKING EXERCISES:

1.Have the students come to the front of the class and read the completed script. Have them
practice eye contact. They should be looking at the audience for the first 4-5 words. The goal is
to get them to Look at the Audience and then look at the paper. Not look at the paper and then
look at the audience. (10 min)

2.Refer to the Example Graphic Organizer.

3.Have the students fill in a Graphic Organizer with their ideas. Complete sentences are ok, but
encouraging students to use words or phrases is recommended. The main goal here is
    spontaneous speech. (10 min)

4.Choose students to come to the front of the class and give their presentation. Students should
state the Goal first – “Holidays are great all year round!” – Go thru each point on the Graphic
Organizer – Say the conclusion statement “So whether Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn…” and
then restate the Goal “Holidays are great all year round!”. If they don’t re-state the Goal exactly
as written…have them say it again. The main goal here is for the students to form a habit of re-
    stating the thesis. (10-20 min)

Holidays - Listening Exercise – Word Scramble

I love holidays. They are the best thing in the
world. The only epblmro is they are always
too srhto. Even summer holidays at school aren’t
long enough. I ltyrecne had an eight-week holiday
and it elfw by. It seems as though time goes
quickly when we are on holiday, and slowly when
we are at school or work. I always really
look rdrofwato holidays – even one-day holidays
are great. I live in a country that has
many niltaoan holidays, so there’s always a break
around the creorn. I feel sorry for
some erwoskr who only get two or three weeks
holiday a year. They can’t do anything or go
anywhere. I love holidays even if I don’t go aayw.
Staying at home is just as good as going on holiday
        somewhere. Sometimes going on holiday
        is slursftse.

          Nothing. They're both
          afraid of getting hurt
          or dying, but it's what
            the hero does that
          makes him a hero, and
             what the coward
          doesn't do that makes

I don’t really have a hero. There are many people
I cesrtep, but they are not really my hero. Some
people choose very sgnaert heroes. My friends
have rock stars and football leysrpa as heroes. Of
course, these people are very good at what they
do, but they’re not alleyr heroes. They get lots of
money for igdno what they love. When they’re not
singing or playing football, I wonder what they’re
doing. I think most of the world’s heroes
are nusung heroes. People who work to help
others every day. We generally don’t teocni these
heroes. Then there are those who put their lisevon
the line for others. Fire fighters, police esoicffr and
        soldiers are heroes. Without them,
the lwdor would be less safe.

                             Leadership – Reading Aloud Exercise

Leadership is a word we here a lot nowadays.
Every time we turn on the news we hear about
how important leadership is. Especially strong
leadership. American presidents often talk about
the importance of leadership. I suppose they’re
right. It’s important that someone takes
responsibility and shows leadership. With the right
leaders, we can achieve success. But not every
leader shows leadership. In many countries around
the world, there are corrupt leaders. They do not
have good leadership skills, they simply control
people by fear. Good leadership is being respected
by everyone and getting the job done. It’s
important to have good leadership in companies
too, except many of the banks’ leaders have not
        shown such good leadership.

                                   Toys – Reading Aloud Exercise

I love toys. And I’m nearly fifty years
old. I think they’re great fun. Of
course I only play with toys with my
grandchildren. Toys of any kind keep
children happy. Even if it’s a horrible,
cheap, free toy from McDonalds, they
love them. The thing that amazes me
is how little toys have changed. The
same toys are in the shops today as
when I was a kid. I guess some toys
will never change. There’ll always be
Lego and cars and toy telephones. The
biggest difference with today’s toys is
that many are digital. Today’s toys
speak to you and children interact with
them more. They’re not so good in the
bath, though. I don’t think I’ll ever get
tired of toys. I still love going to toy
stores and buying them – as presents,
     of course.

Dangerous toys lurk on store shelves, group warns
Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCpmSLMBUsA

Washington (CNN) -- 'Tis the season to be wary when it comes to buying toys for children this holiday.
Toxic and dangerous toys are right now sitting on store shelves, and a public interest group is warning consumers to
beware when purchasing toys for toddlers because of possible safety hazards.
The U.S. Public Interest Research Group released its 27th annual Trouble in Toyland survey Tuesday, and the progress
report concluded what it has noted in previous years: toy hazards come in a variety of shapes and forms.
Children can be injured from small parts that pose choking risks, strangled by cords on pull toys, lacerated by sharp
edges, and endangered by exposure to toxic chemicals.
Tents recalled for suffocation risk
Over the years, the organization said, its reports have led to more than 150 recalls and other regulatory actions.
This year's list "includes a potentially dangerous magnet toy, a bowling game that is a choking hazard and a key chain
rattle that may be harmful to little ears," it said.
Researchers visited national toy stores, malls and dollar stores in September, October and November this year to look
for potential toxic, choking, strangulation and noise hazards.
"We should be able to trust that the toys we buy are safe. However, until that's the case, parents need to watch out
for common hazards when shopping for toys," said Nasima Hossain, public health advocate for Public Interest
Research Group, in a release detailing the report.
Folding bicycles recalled
The Toy Industry Association, which represents more than 500 manufacturers in the United States, said, "Safety is our
top priority all year," and a spokesman called the group's survey "another of its needlessly frightening reports."
"Its headlines cry for caution but the fine print clarifies that most of the products on their list actually comply with
the strict toy safety standards that are already in place in the U.S.," said Stacy Leistner, vice president of
communications for the association. "Our companies are manufacturing to current regulations."
Leistner said that with some 3 billion toys sold in the United States every year, "we have a good track record for our
companies making safe products."
Among the survey's findings:
-- Lead exposure from toys remains a serious risk to the brains of young children and "can cause permanent mental
and developmental impairments."
-- Magnet toys pose problems, especially if the magnets are swallowed. The Consumer Product Safety Commission
has estimated there were 1,700 emergency room cases nationwide between 2009 and 2011 involving the ingestion of
high-power magnets, nearly three-quarters of them in children between 4 and 12.
Magnetic Buckeyballs discontinued
-- Two toys -- a car driving wheel on a console and a toy guitar -- exceed the recommended limit for continuous
exposure to noise above 65 decibels. Researchers say one in five U.S. children will have some degree of hearing loss
by the time they reach the age of 12.
-- Several toys contain small parts having what the organization says is improper labeling and "might be mistakenly
purchased for children under 3." Choking on small toy parts such as marbles and balloons has resulted in hundreds of
deaths over the past two decades.
Consumers are urged to examine toys carefully for potential dangers before making a purchase. The U.S. Public
Interest Research Group recommends the Consumer Product Safety Commission review its definition of "small part"
or "small toy" to include parts and toys that are larger than the current standard but have been shown to pose a
choking hazard. It also calls for "vigorous" enforcement of lead limits in toys.

  • 74. “Verbal Power Plan” Toys – Reading Aloud Exercise I love toys. And I’m nearly fifty years old. I think they’re great fun. Of course I only play with toys with my grandchildren. Toys of any kind keep children happy. Even if it’s a horrible, cheap, free toy from McDonalds, they love them. The thing that amazes me is how little toys have changed. The same toys are in the shops today as when I was a kid. I guess some toys will never change. There’ll always be Lego and cars and toy telephones. The biggest difference with today’s toys is that many are digital. Today’s toys speak to you and children interact with them more. They’re not so good in the bath, though. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of toys. I still love going to toy stores and buying them – as presents, of course. • 76. “Verbal Power Plan” Dangerous toys lurk on store shelves, group warns Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCpmSLMBUsA Washington (CNN) -- 'Tis the season to be wary when it comes to buying toys for children this holiday. Toxic and dangerous toys are right now sitting on store shelves, and a public interest group is warning consumers to beware when purchasing toys for toddlers because of possible safety hazards. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group released its 27th annual Trouble in Toyland survey Tuesday, and the progress report concluded what it has noted in previous years: toy hazards come in a variety of shapes and forms. Children can be injured from small parts that pose choking risks, strangled by cords on pull toys, lacerated by sharp edges, and endangered by exposure to toxic chemicals. Tents recalled for suffocation risk Over the years, the organization said, its reports have led to more than 150 recalls and other regulatory actions. This year's list "includes a potentially dangerous magnet toy, a bowling game that is a choking hazard and a key chain rattle that may be harmful to little ears," it said. Researchers visited national toy stores, malls and dollar stores in September, October and November this year to look for potential toxic, choking, strangulation and noise hazards. "We should be able to trust that the toys we buy are safe. However, until that's the case, parents need to watch out for common hazards when shopping for toys," said Nasima Hossain, public health advocate for Public Interest Research Group, in a release detailing the report. Folding bicycles recalled The Toy Industry Association, which represents more than 500 manufacturers in the United States, said, "Safety is our top priority all year," and a spokesman called the group's survey "another of its needlessly frightening reports." "Its headlines cry for caution but the fine print clarifies that most of the products on their list actually comply with the strict toy safety standards that are already in place in the U.S.," said Stacy Leistner, vice president of communications for the association. "Our companies are manufacturing to current regulations." Leistner said that with some 3 billion toys sold in the United States every year, "we have a good track record for our companies making safe products." Among the survey's findings: -- Lead exposure from toys remains a serious risk to the brains of young children and "can cause permanent mental and developmental impairments." -- Magnet toys pose problems, especially if the magnets are swallowed. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has estimated there were 1,700 emergency room cases nationwide between 2009 and 2011 involving the ingestion of high-power magnets, nearly three-quarters of them in children between 4 and 12. Magnetic Buckeyballs discontinued -- Two toys -- a car driving wheel on a console and a toy guitar -- exceed the recommended limit for continuous exposure to noise above 65 decibels. Researchers say one in five U.S. children will have some degree of hearing loss by the time they reach the age of 12. -- Several toys contain small parts having what the organization says is improper labeling and "might be mistakenly purchased for children under 3." Choking on small toy parts such as marbles and balloons has resulted in hundreds of deaths over the past two decades. Consumers are urged to examine toys carefully for potential dangers before making a purchase. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group recommends the Consumer Product Safety Commission review its definition of "small part" or "small toy" to include parts and toys that are larger than the current standard but have been shown to pose a choking hazard. It also calls for "vigorous" enforcement of lead limits in toys.
